I don't get what you mean? I deleted everything in the tower, not building off of it.

You didn't delete the views of the original level. You can still see them in the minimap, and seeing as it appears you haven't altered the Sprite Sets it's just going to make your level feel like it was constructed a lot like the original level.

Right, my problem. You make someone go to the doctor and you 'like the effect' so 'it will stay'. Nice job.

For some constructive criticism:

-Tilesets look good, but the levels themselves look bland, particularly how huge and square most of the platforms are. You've definitely got potential to do better. There are some segments that are pretty creative.
-Like Arceus said, you can't use tilesets for the Community Remix. They're not free-to-use, they're made specifically for a unique hack.

Is there significance to the title of the hacl? When I hear the word "outer", I immediately associate it with Space, and the NSMB/SMG2 cover music you used in the trailer also seems to indicate some kind of association, and the Mini Mario physics also emulates moon-gravity.

2015 is imminent, so I think it's safe to say no more hacks will be launching in 2014. But that's OK.

Out of the 13 released NSMB Hacks in total, six of them were released this year. Four of which are full-length hacks. That's fairly impressive. In one year we almost doubled the amount of NSMB hacks from 2010-2013. We've had some pretty cool advancements in hacking as well. It's been a good year for NSMBHD.

May 2015 be just as great. The v1.0 patch of my fourth hack is hiding somewhere in cyberspace waiting for the big reveal on New Year's Day. It seems Arceus is working on a new project and I'm already hard at work on Super Mario: Endless Earth, which will be revealed sooner than you think. Skawo's making steady progress with his super impressive hack. Ray and Freeze are back in swing with Adventure Super Mario Bros., Thierry has taken over development of the NSMB2 remake, and New Super Holiday Bros. is also back. 2015 hasn't even begun yet and looks like a very promising year.

Happy New Year, when it comes, and sorry I didn't have anything to show for Christmas!

If it were to be used for homebrew instead of piracy I would have appreciated it more.

A piracy plague on a console can make terrible things happen, like a predominantly shovelware library, and developers putting more time into anti-piracy measures instead of the actual games they produce making even high profile games drop in quality.

Though I can't say I wasn't once part of the problem. If I never had my R4DS, I never would have become part of this hacking community. Of course, I've come to my senses now. I understand the games are a lot more satisfying when you pay money for them, taking the lawful route benefits everybody.

But I wish I had a way to hack NSMB2 without a Gateway

Pic of the week begins on Monday. These weekly updates will usually just feature one new screenshot that shows off either 1. A new area, 2. A new or updated tileset/background, or 3. A hint to an unannounced feature.

I think he was mostly talking about DS and Wii games, games that doesn't have demos.
I was mainly talking about Computer Games here.

But remember, there are a lot more people, who just Pirate for 'Free Games', rather than 'to try them out'.
Let's say 100 people pirate a game. That game is just a digital copy of the game and does not "damage" the creators when pirated. There is a slight chance that one likes the game and buys it afterwards (let's assume that 20% do this). That would make 20 people that buy the game, which is good. So, all in all, pirating gets the creators more money.
If pirating didn't exist, those 100 people would likely say "Fuck this, I am not gonna risk 60€ on this product." Of course, some of them would sure take the risk that the game is shit and spend the 60€, but I am sure that less people would do this than "pirating and buying the game afterwards". So the game creators get more money in a world where pirating does exist.

Sorry if my explanation is unclear. It is hard for me to put my thoughts in words, especially in englich.

I understand what you mean. A pirated game doesn't necessarily equal a sale loss. There are people who, if they didn't pirate the game wouldn't have gotten it otherwise.

But more often than not, game pirates are just being cheap and trashy while using that excuse. But I'd say, that if piracy didn't exist and those people really did want to play the game, they'd pay money for it.

Besides, in the worst case scenario if someone doesn't like a game they bought, a lot of stores will refund you if you're unsatisfied with your purchase. And even if they didn't you could always sell it online or trade it in for something. There are always ways get your money back with hardcopies of games.

Just a random question, in your underwater pic you posted, you said the wood pillars were maching to the ones at the surface, so will we be able to go to the surface by simply swimming up there, without taking a pipe? Same for the reverse, we could jump in the water and let ourselves sink to acces the underwater section. Even tough it would require a lot of area warps...

Also the first screenshot in the main post is a lil incoherent, we have poisonned water at the surface but normal one 1 meter deeper

Unfortunately that's not possible. It was my original intention for the hack, but the Warp Sprite only allows you to travel to entrances with an ID of 15 or lower. For the size and scope of this world, there are bound to be dozens of entrances in each area, possibly even hundreds. But I have used the Warp Sprite in some rare occasions. It's actually probably for the best. This way the hack retains the primary platformer element of not-falling-into-holes.

I'm aware about the poison water/clean water thing. If I had used clean swimmable water the area would have been too easy (no worrying about falling into it), and it would have made people think that they can just drop down into the underwater area, which for the reason I explained would just kill them.

In-game text is low-res, not to mention most of the text in the game is just a texture. It wouldn't look good.

Hey everyone.  Hiccup sent me .pngs of the NSMBU/NSLU tilesets, so I should be able to rip them easily enough now.

NSMBU Sky - Blue (no mushrooms)

DOWNLOAD HERE. Uses two palettes. Credit to roadrunnerwmc, treeki, and Hiccup.

No mushrooms yet, since like NSMBWii, NSMBU's mushrooms are sprites. They aren't technically part of the tileset, so I'll have to rip them separately myself later.

Fun fact: NSMBU tiles are 64x64, compared to NSMB's 16x16 tiles.

Fantastic! I have to use this for Endless Earth.

The Grey Pipe seen in the Underground screenshots is just a recolor of the standard pipe- replacing yellow. I don't like playing Russian Roulette with jyotyu editing so I tend to be very careful with it.

Pic of the Week - Week 6

Here we have a Spooky Forest prototype. This tileset is actually the first tileset I had completed for Endless Earth, made over a year ago. The background is a prototype. I know it needs work, so you can spare me the lecture. In the future, the trees will be changed to completely black, and the gradient for the clouds still needs a bit of tweaking to get right.

It's been requested many times to implement some kind of music tool. They're all been denied in the past so I wouldn't imagine anything will come from this request.

Here's a forest area with level design shamelessly stolen from New Super Mario Bros. U. Well, not exactly. When I played NSMBU in 2012 I really enjoyed Sode Jungle, particularly the focus on Giant enemies. That's not possible in New Super Mario Bros. DS, so instead I mimicked the visual design while making tweaks to how to progress through the area. In NSMBU, you would have been able to knock a Giant Koopa Shell into those bricks. In Endless Earth, you have to take a different, more puzzle-based approach.

Are you going to change the Bottom Screen background? It would look less empty then, I think.

I'm hoping to be able to change the default background to the NES Super Mario Bros. background, since it has the most content and I'd be able to experiment with it a bit.

EDIT: Time for another Pic of the Week!

Pic of the Week - Week 8

Secreted away somewhere in the Spooky Forest, Mario seems to have found something. It's some kind of building and it seems like it has some kind of importance. For whatever reason, Mario can't seem to get in there yet. I guess he'll have to come back later once he's a bit more well traveled to see what lays beyond. Just so you know, this particular location will not be accessible in the Demo release. Progress has been a bit slow for the last month, but to reiterate what I stated seven weeks ago, there will be between 4 or 5 levels worth of content in the demo. Though it'll be a lengthy area, the demo won't technically be open world since most of the pipes you'll find don't lead anywhere yet. But it demonstrates the total length from one edge of the map to another.

Also, as this screenshot indicates, there will be more content to Super Mario: Endless Earth that goes beyond the 2,016 screen overworld map. You'll just have to wait for the full release on that one.

Gonna ask for some suggestions here. I figured a good way to utilize the empty bottom screen space was to use the Boo animation from the Ghost Houses in some way- but they're difficult to use because of the following:

-The Boo is a symmetrical image, so any kind of replacement image also has to be symmetrical.
-It appears twice on the Bottom Screen on the left and right of the screen.
-It "flashes" by changing color.

Originally I wanted to use the Endless Earth symbol, but I already knew that wasn't possible.
Then I though about making an 'E', so it'll appear as "E E" for Endless Earth. But E isn't symmetrical so it won't work.
Finally I thought about some sort of Mario symbol. A Mushroom, Mario's Face, Fire Flower, Star, etc., but I'm still unsure because I only have one color to work with.

Any suggestions for a symmetrical image that I can use to replace the Boos on the Bottom Screen? It'd be great if I was able to take advantage of the waving arms on the Boo model, but it's not necessary.
