I found a couple bugs with this
1: The spike balls can still hurt Mario/enemies (and probably destroy blocks too) while it's "dying"
2: You should probably fix up the Z-order a bit, the spike ball shouldn't be in front of Spike's hand...

If I remember correctly, the Mario Vs. Luigi mode has its own files to load, hence why pipes aren't loaded either. A better ASM hack would be to load all kinds of graphics and textures with no limitation, in my opinion. Don't know how hard that would be, though.

I think he is referring to the pipe joints, which are not loaded in MvsL.
