Have you ever played "New-ISH" Super Mario Bros. DS? If so, have you ever thought or said that it's a polished, flawless hack with no mistakes whatsoever? Yeah, that's what I thought. But don't get too excited; this hack ain't perfect either. If you want a perfect hack, there isn't one.

"New-ISH" Super Mario Bros. DS HD*, or "New-ISH" HD* for short, will be a full, 80-level remake of "New-ISH" Super Mario Bros. DS by  Skylander, planning to really shine the potential of said game. Gameplay will be refined with a too-much-free-time polish, same with the visuals and audio. The overall gameplay experience will just gain a buff, ridding the original of most of its problems.

This hack will include:
* 80 redesigned levels, all from the original "New-ISH" game.
* Overall refined gameplay.
* Edited backgrounds and original tilesets made by yours truly.
* Minor world theme changes to spice the game up.
* Edited world maps.
* The Newer DS soundtrack, with a few other songs.
* Multiple edited graphics, including the HUD, enemies and obstacles.
* Some minor ASM.

Download
.xdelta
This is only a World 1 demo to show what the hack will offer. The finished version will be uploaded when it's finished, with little to no patches in between. I'll make sure to post whatever's happening, though.

Levels

W1: Sunset Meadows (99.9%)
1-1: Peach's Prairie (100%)
1-2: Fungi Hollow (100%)
1-3: Sunset Swamp (100%)
1-T: Lift Lookout (100%)
1-4: Micro Woods (100%)
1-Can: Snowset Cannon (100%)
1-5: Tightrope Highs (100%)
1-A: Glut Grotto (100%)
1-Cas: Forest Fortress (99.9%, see below)

Bugs 'n' Stuff that I don't know how to fix
* Most sound effects on the world map are mute.
* After exiting the Warp Pipe from the room of Star Coin 3 from World 1-Castle, the fog effect disappears, no matter what.

Screenshot Comparison
To really show you the power of "New-ISH" HD*, I've provided some comparison screenshots. The original hack is on the left, while "New-ISH" HD* is on the right.

* Any mention of HD is false. The DS is physically incapable of producing HD graphics.

If you already know DS is incapable of producing HD graphics, why would you bother putting HD in the name?

Plus, no hacks/games are flawless without any mistakes. Even official Nintendo games and Newer has its own problems.

Also, judging by the screenshots, is this just an upgrade on graphics? I don't see any changes in level design. As a hack of a platforming game, level design is the core of the game, so it's best to design original levels rather than using old ones.

I like the Concept but,
i don't like the Name,
because the DS has no HD Feature
( except DS Emulators with HD Rendering ),
I think it really better if it should not be called HD. You could call it DX or Remaster,
but it's your choice!
Otherwise,
I find the new textures very successful,
keep up the good work!

It looks like he's using the newer engine :tm: instead of the base game

Edit: Wait no, nvm. He's just editing the textures of things

I'm not going to criticise your tilesets since you're a beginner, but I don't like them. it feels like you attempted to pass effortless drawing as "modern looks".

one thing I will point out. the mushroom platforms honestly look terrible.

Okay, so I used HD in the name as a kind of ironic name of sorts, but I guess it didn't stick. I didn't want to use Deluxe or Remaster because, in my opinion, they're too generic.

Also, there are gameplay changes. While none are too major, I did move some Star Coins to make them more challenging, made bosses harder by removing platforms and adding more health, and also adding the correct tiles at the top of slopes (the original had way too many wrong tiles on top of slopes, making it so you stop once you're at the top of the slopes). Later down the line I'll have to make more gameplay changes, such as annoying Star Coins and enemies which don't fit their themes.

EDIT: While it's alright that you dislike the tilesets, I wasn't trying to make them too fancy or anything because of "modern looks." I wanted this hack to have a more unique art style compared to other hacks, which mostly have the same style of tilesets (with rips from other Mario games and simple edits).

The tilesets have a few problems. They're not shaded enough, and the jungle tileset is just an edit of the grassland tileset. It's hit and miss, a lot of it looks fine and a lot of it doesn't.

While I can agree on the shading, the jungle tileset isn't just an edit of the grassland tileset. While yes, it uses the grassland grass, it has a completely different structure, with the bumped walls and ceilings, and completely different decorations. I just used the grassland grass because it saved time and still fit the jungle aesthetic.

I will probably work on the shading next.

EDIT: Could you tell me exactly which ones work and which ones don't?

well what I'm saying is to not reuse the grass. it just looks kinda lazy. as for what works, well I guess the grass looks alright. the rest is kinda bad because it's mostly just solid colors. most of the decorations look fine too.

I am Skylander Katfish, and I approve this message. Thank you so mucn for doing this. I kinda rushed it to get it done, not realizing some mistakes with my hack that I missed.

No problem!

Anyways, I've improved upon the underground tileset (on the right). Does it look better? Is it too subtle?

..all you did was increase shadows by a minuscule amount. the plain white on the shrooms is still ugly.

I'm no expert, but the way you spread the dots and thier flat color makes it worse than the original to me.

your edit just now does help a little, but doesn't fix the issue.

I can't tell you to fix every little thing I see. at this point, if I were to fix your graphics myself I'd be redoing entire designs.

I was trying this demo but when I tried to play 1-Tower or 1-A the game crashed. I don't why, but i think it's because when i patched my U rom i had to skip checksums or bad luck ?
EDIT: No, i tried using a complete savefile but nothing changed.
I checked the rom with nsmbe 5.2 and i found the their area 1 can't be open because there's an 'overflow'

I remember this exact problem happening to me when I tried other hacks with .xdelta. I don't know exactly why, but it may be my original NSMB ROM, as I think I accidentally clicked "save" once when I was just checking out levels. The problem is, though, that it's hard to find a legit NSMB ROM at this time. Sadly, right now, those levels are probably off-limits until I can find a good ROM (which may take a while...). Sorry for the inconvenience! Will post new .xdelta if I can find a good ROM.

er, that's gonna affect more than a few levels if you open the rom and save anything. even just opening the rom is a bad idea, many editors instantly patch or alter the rom upon opening.

New .xdelta posted with new ROM! Tested and it should not have any issues.

EDIT: I improved the underground tileset once more. I added more shading to the ground tiles, and changed the mushroom a bit. I think this mushroom will be the final design, as, in my opinion, it doesn't look too bad. The old one had way too little circles.

but the circles are spread in an unnatural way. they're all perfectly horizontally aligned and at regular intervals. you should maybe think about fixing that.

But how exactly would I fix that without it looking messy? Also, the mushrooms from the original game are also perfectly aligned horizontally and at regular intervals.

Imo, I think they look kinda nice for now. But like Poudink said, the circles could use some variety. Anyways, I'd be more worried about the coins and blocks. Dunno how to put it, but they look too flashy?

I think the coins and blocks look good. To me, they fit the aesthetic pretty well and aren't really flashy. IDK though, maybe they look trash, but I like them the way they are. Also, how do I put some variety in the circles without it looking messy?
