Logo: New Super Mario Bros. DS Mix

Ancient Project Tape (old post)

As Endless Earth's bugs seem to never end (no offense to  MarioFanatic64), and fixing the fatal problem of the "big level" mechanic is nearly impossible, I am introducing a "new" hack, New Super Mario Bros. DS Mix.

New Super Mario Bros. DS Mix is supposed to be a sequel of the popular SMB3 romhack Super Mario Bros. 3Mix. It is a remix of about 10 different games, from Super Mario Land to New Super Mario Bros. U, using the themes/music from these games. However, none of the levels are remakes, but rather levels created in that "style".

This game will feature:
  • New tilesets (modified and improved to suit the 2.5D experience of NSMB)
  • Ported music
  • A few levels using clones (SM3DW)
  • ASM hacks

New Super Mario Bros. DS Mix will also use Newer DS (1.07) as the base ROM. Huge thanks to  skawo and the Newer Team!

Screenshots and videos:
(I will post the updated ones tomorrow, here are the ones from Ancient Project Tape. Perhaps you can treat this as a preview of what is SMB style.)

Credits: none yet
Release Date: TBD

The unfinished Ancient Project Tape will be released alongside New Super Mario Bros. DS Mix.

Even if I am not a huge fan of remaking older games I have to admit that this looks pretty cool. Will definetly give it a shot :D

How do you move from level to level? Is there just a pipe at the end of the classic level?

What happens if you want to go back a level?

What happens after all the achievements are completed?

Is it open world like endless earth or one (really really) long level?

Looks real interesting

This is my plan, but it may not come true because I don't know ASM:

I'll try to get rid of the world map and play the credits once the level is finished. Credits will play. Stars will be given according to the number of Star Coins you collect.

You cannot "go back", as I will set them to exit only. Otherwise, some green rings using "move 8 pixels right" will reload.

It's one really long level.

I'll try to make the exits from a stage more interesting. Sometimes it's a pipe, sometimes it's a end castle. I nuked the door animation and sound, and I duplicated a flipped castle.

Sooo, you want to go to 1-1 when you load a file? Also triggering the credits is as easy as changing scenes. Just hook to exitLevel, and uh, pretty sure the file stars is just a field in saveData that you can set. I can write this for you if you'd like.

A little preview, without the Green Rings.

The progress bar does not move when Mario is overflowed to another level. I decided to get rid of it.

Some bad news here
I am finishing 2-1, and the game crashed after I cleared 1-4. You know what it means? Yes. The game somehow cannot handle the level. I do not know how MF64 got the game to work, so I will need to invest time into SMEE and port everything there.

As I am working on another project right now and due to me being lazy & hating to port stuff, this project may be significantly delayed. I hope you can understand the situation and be patient. Thank you.

I have updated the main post. Sorry if I have disappointed any of you, but this is the only choice I can make rather than cancelling the project.

Rip me I had a very similar idea for a sequel for my hack (coming 2030).

The old failed Project Tape will be released (W1 only) alongside a beta for the current version of the hack (complicated, I know ). Here is a sneak peek at a tileset:

(taken from SMA4 and made minor modifications)

Credits to jdaster64 on Spriters Resource for the rip.
