Thinking about the NSMBDS community project and I think if that is ever going to be a thing it'd need to be completely redone. Like look to the SMW community projects for example, They do the levels first then they put together the overworld around them. Rather then how we were just calling levels.

Also ditch world themes, let people make whatever they want.
The only thing they would have to call is the particular level slot since there is a set amount of areas, unless a hack was made to allow adding slots.
That would fix all the issues of the project.
oh and do all the crazy asm either before it's started or after it's done, not during.
Unless it's simple things like custom enemies for someone's level or something.

Also about tilesets and backgrounds, that would also be tricky I suppose. I think the best bet would to either stick with vanilla and do a art overhaul after all levels are done or replace all the art right away and then use that.

One last idea. How about not making this a full NSMBDS hack? Just enough for 1 or 2 worlds, that way we can go nuts with quality over quantity.

This pretty much sums up what went wrong; the project was too ambitious and there was no real guidance so everything just fell apart.

But, this is a good idea. We have the tools, resources, and just about everything else, we just need the community.

Even though this project is probably dead for good it'd be pretty cool to see it revived like this.

to be honest I didn't like the Community Remix tilesets all that much, and we didn't really have a list of the tilesets we were allowed to use.

I think if we stick with just one or two worlds we can then have every level be a unique tileset and background because then we wouldn't have to worry as much when it comes to running out of them.

They could just let everyone use whatever tileset/background we wanted, as now it is possible to add more files to nsmb, running out of spaces shoudn't be a problem

It's possible to add more backgrounds and tilesets now? I knew about music but not those? If that's the case then yeah that should really make things work out better.

Edit: So I looked around and tried things out since I haven't been keeping up that much with asm hacking and yeah we have everything we could possibly need. Every area can use their own tilesets and backgrounds.

I think if we were to reboot this we should use this as a base: https://nsmbhd.net/thread/3477-asm-hacks-ready-for-importing-download/ but with the level previews with character changer and without the asm hack that removes the pause time when you get hit or collect a powerup. As well as the more music hack.

That way we have pretty much what we need.

The tileset per area ASM hack is a pain to work with. I wouldn't recommend it.

Dirbaio was against the project having a leader, so everything went to shit when nobody was there to make decisions and manage the project.

We have more of chance of getting an original E3 copy of NSMB than Dirbaio checking this forum, let alone continue the project.

But still, as Dirbaio isn't really being involved in NSMBHD (let alone the Community Remix), I think the more active admins should decide this hack will have a project leader this time. Not trying to push down Dirbaio or anything, but I honestly don't even think it'd be much of a problem to him if we did it this way.

When I registered there are about 50 people who are active
I think it is enough for the hack, so basically everyone makes a level then submits it, it will be finished within no time.
But the problem we are facing is that nobody cares about the Community Remix and no one to promote and collect the levels...

There were many 1-1's posted here and none were added to the levels list, someone else (maybe Ricbent?) has to manage the level list and update it as the levels are being posted.

A lot of people on this site don't actually hack NSMB. I've been on this site for around 2 years and haven't completed a single level. And of people that do actually hack, only a small percentage will actually put in the effort to make a level. And only a fraction of whoever is left will actually make a good quality level. If we remove all quality control the hack might be finished, eventually, but what will come out of it most likely won't be fun to play at all. Also, I doubt a leader for the CR will be enough to motivate people to actually make levels for the hack
