I forgot that I didn't have a pic lined up for this week, so instead of taking one, have this picture of the title screen?

I say it how it is. You could work on a shitty game for 2.7 years and it'll still be shit.

Constructive criticism is the key to improvement.
Destructive criticism discourages newcomers and damages the board's reputation.
It's also considered flaming, which is against the rules.

Why do you still not have any screenshots.

An update on the situation of things

I'm writing this in regards to a comment I made at the end of the last trailer I published for Super Mario: Endless Earth. At the end of the trailer, I declared that the hack would be released before Super Mario Odyssey, which is launching only one month from now.

For starters, I never personally expected that I would have the game out at that point in time. By publishing that as a promise, I was setting a challenge upon myself to have the game out by that date. There's more to why I wanted it out before Odyssey anyway, and that is that my mind has been a clutter for a long, long time now.

No matter what's going on in my life, I can never really be relaxed. All that my mind is set on, all the time, is that I need to finish the things that I started. Chief among those things being Endless Earth, and also the Luigi 'expansion' I teased a while back, the Clone Tag Team remakes (which still stand at about 50% done), etc. You get the idea. My hacking projects are at the forefront of my anxiety. Yet, when I bring myself to work on them I can't pay attention and turn away after about an hour or so. When Newer DS launches, Newer U will be taking charge of development with the Newer Team, so I'm going to be involved with that too. And the thing is, I work a 40-hour week, before the commute, I need to sleep 8 hours a day. My free time evaporates and I'd really rather be enjoying myself than working on hacks, and that's a bummer.

It's driving me mad. I promised myself that I would get Endless Earth out so I could put my mind at ease for a while, whilst I enjoy Odyssey, but at the pace I'm going it's just not going to happen.

Let me be clear, Super Mario: Endless Earth is so very, very close to completion. The open world is done It alone is larger than ANY of my previous hacks. Two of eight fortresses are complete. The third has been in real progress for about a week now. These fortresses I aim to be about three times the length of an average fortress level, with each fortress having multiple routes that routinely re-connect so you can 'change' your route and continue.

The fortresses, their corresponding bosses, and the ending cutscene is all that needs to be done for me to call it complete.

I'm going to keep trying to get Super Mario: Endless Earth out in 2017. Maybe, just maybe if some miracle happens you'll all be playing it in a month. I doubt that.

However, I will be delaying Super Luigi: Endless Earth, which was meant to be released simultaneously. Think of this hack as a 'DLC' for the game, like New Super Luigi U. The open world remains the same, maybe slightly remixed with different Power Star placements, but the graphics and soundtrack are new, and the game has its own set of fortresses placed at different points in the map. If I may tease the plot a little:

It's been several months since the events of Super Mario: Endless Earth, and Luigi hasn't seen Mario in a while...

So that's what's going on. I'm trying to give the hack attention when I can.

A new update:
I stopped Pic of the Week again because I mostly used it to get myself out of my block. As far as workload goes, I've almost finished building Bowser's Castle, though this doesn't include the Boss encounter. That, and the ending cutscene is all that remains, which shouldn't be too hard- just tedious.

Not much longer now.

A while ago, the YouTuber Nathaniel Bandy reached out to me for help setting up a ROM for a video. The challenge was to see if New Super Mario Bros. could be beaten if levels were played from the end of the level, to the beginning.

Here is the video:

Here is the NMP patch so you can try it out yourselves:

NSMB Backwards Challenge v1.1

Changes made to the ROM:
-The spawn point has been placed at the end of every level (either next to the flagpole or on the staircase leading to it)
-The Goal Pole at the end of every level is inactive. An active flagpole has been added at the beginning of every level, slightly beyond the original spawn point.
-In some cases, due to spriteset limitations a flagpole can't be placed at the beginning of a level, so I've placed a pipe that leads to a separate room with a flagpole instead.
-In the case of Castles and Towers, the door to the Boss has been moved to the start of the level.
-Essential one-way doors and pipes are now accessible from either side. This excludes one-way entrances to hidden areas.
-Levels with autoscroll have had autoscroll reconfigured or disabled to allow Mario to go backwards.

Enjoy.

I am here! And I am saying goodbye to jul forever!

On topic about me, here's my hacking history:
In 2008, I downloaded Toad's Tool 64 for the first time and started making my own hack, "Super Mario 64 2". It was really a primitive hack. It was mostly same levels with different stars, and had some crappy textures.
After abandoning that hack, In mid 2009, I began NSMB hacking by making the first full NSMB hack. "New Super Mario Bros. 2" (I have some really original names, don't I?)
NSMB2 was finished in March 2010, and it shouldn't have been released so early. It was buggy, crappy looking, and didn't exactly have the best level designs. If anything, NSMB2 was my biggest regret with NSMB hacking.
After NSMB2, I started creating "New Retro Mario Bros. 3", which was going to be a full remake of the NES's "Super Mario Bros. 3", however after several months competing with SKJmin's SMB3 remake, I decided to give up and let him steal the show, which had became the most well-known NSMB hack of our time.
Partially tired of failure, I decided to form a team with Hiccup and we began making the "NSMB Beta Replica", which of course remade the beta levels and tilesets seen in prototype screenshots and videos.
Eventually, I moved on from the beta replica to try my luck with SM64 hacking again. With new hacking possibilities, I started to make entirely original 3-D environments to insert into SM64, which became a revival of my first, unannounced hack, SM642.
All was going well until I had problems with my computer, and long story short, I can no longer play N64 games on my computer. So until further notice, I have abandoned that hack once more.
Now in 2011, after taking a rather refreshing break, I have returned to NSMB hacking, with my latest hack, "New Super Mario Bros. 5: Clone Tag Team", which, although it's only in it's private beta stage, has been my most successful hack so far.
I plan on continuing this hack until it's finished, so stay tuned!

If you use the dump .avi function in DeSmuMe, video will always be outputted at full speed. The speed of your computer won't effect the final recording at all.

I tried that once, but it made my computer lag so much it took me an hour to film a 2 minute clip. Additionally, it was several Gigabytes in size...

-Make sure you provide everything the player needs to get through the level. E.g. Koopa Shells by masses of Brick Blocks.

-Don't do anything Nintendo wouldn't do. Add plausibility to your levels so the player believes that the hack could be an official game.

-Don't turn a Remake into a port. If people wanted to play SMB1 for example, they'd just play the NES Game. Update the Graphics, don't downgrade them (unless that's your artistic intention). Add some new levels, as long as they don't stray too far away from the design styles of the original game. E.g. Don't do an SKJmin.

-If it's been done once, that's enough. E.g. You designed a really great level, take inspiration from it for your new levels, but don't try to recreate it in a different skin.

-Add Easter Eggs! Little secrets here and there are what keep people playing.

Sorry about that. But that doesn't mean we can't both use a Luigi's Mansion tileset. Almost everyone uses the NSMBW Grassland.
