If you were wondering what those particle effects were in the Lava Fortress, this is your answer. Mario's got to worry about more than his footing in this area.

We all need to look back and laugh at ourselves once in a while. Here you post memes you made that relate to NSMBHD and the users of NSMBHD. This is just for some laughs, you can reference ANY user you want here, but play nicely.

Here's some of the memes I made (note that none of them are directly meant to offend anyone):

I know how to change the Red Coin Ring blue!

-Go to the /enemy folder in the editor and export obj_e3_ring.nsbmd
-Open the nsbmd with a Hex Editor
-Go to offset 0x00000487 and change "31" into "32". Next, go to offset 0x00000497 and change "32" into "31". Next, go to offset 0x000004F7 and change "31" into "32". And finally, go to offset 0x00000507 and change "32" into "31".
-Save, import back into NSMB.

Orengefox taught me that little trick.

I just posted this to my DeviantArt page.

I bought an old store display for Gamecube a few months ago. It took a lot of grit, spit and duct tape but I've restored it to a very serviceable condition. Take a look:

So here's something. Hack #4 will most likely be coming out this year but you haven't seen anything yet! Might as well show you something.

So here it is. The very first screenshot of Hack #4 for you to enjoy:

I said I was going to make a tutorial, so now I am.

This is the process that I use if I need a background that uses two palettes. Right now, the editor only supports one palette through the background editor. But, this can be worked around by finding the locations of the background’s files and using the editor’s built-in 2D Texture Editor to edit them as it they are just tilesets or textures. This is the basic, put-together-in-half-an-hour guide:

Everything you need is in these two folders. For each image, there is a corresponding palette file that shares a similar name. Example:

d_2d_I_M_back_demo_castle_ncg.bin – Image File
d_2d_I_M_back_demo_castle_ncl.bin – Palette File

These particular files make up the background for the Title Screen, which isn’t editable through the standard background editor, but is easy to do through this method. All the other background files in the game are in the same directory.

Now, there are three classifications for the files in these folders that are determined by a key word:

free – The Top Layer of a Background
back – The Bottom Layer of a Background
tikei – A Tileset

So if you select an image file and the correct palette file, you’ll be able to view the background in the 2D Texture Editor, like this:

Everything from here on in is fairly self-explanatory. Once you find your background of choice, click “Export all bitmaps with all palettes”, and edit your background externally with any image editor. As usual, I recommend GIMP. When you’re done, click “Import all bitmaps with all palettes”, import your modified background and save your work.

You can use this method to produce a different variety of effects with your backgrounds- not just palette swapping! You can have different segments of a single background divided between two palettes to ensure a minimum loss of detail and color! If you do this, all you have to do afterwards is re-tile the background through the background editor.

I can make a more detailed tutorial, but for now I think this will suffice. In fact, I'm certain that any unanswered questions can probably be answered by reading through tutorial How to do multi-palette tilesets!. It's a transferable process.

Post layout disabled for readability.

This looks awesome! When does it realese/come out?

When it's ready.

(A very long time)

But a demo should be ready within a few weeks.

It's time for the very first Pic of the Week!

Here we have another underwater area, but the sand and the pier legs seem to indicate we're close to a beach area. And that's true. If you follow the sand you'll find a pipe which takes you to surface. The pier legs actually match up perfectly with the piers in the beach area above.

Pic of the Week - Week 4

There's a couple people I'd like to thank for providing free graphics. First, to SaturnYoshi, who made the background at my request. To fit in with Endless Earth's art direction a bit more I made a few edits myself. Hope you don't mind! Secondly, the tileset (which was originally a snow tileset) is thanks to Freeze. I just recolored the snow to make it look like grass. These brown tiles are merged into the same tileset as the Stone Grassland Tileset that was in the first batch of screenshots- so even though this open world will only support a a particular amount of areas, I can still provide more different looking environments to freshen things up.

Pic of the Week - Week 5

Just a small update this week. I wasn't happy with the clouds in the Grassy Plains BG, so I edited the NSMB style ones over the existing background. Looks much nicer now, if you ask me. I've still got another two Pics of the Week lined up to show in the future- but recently I've hit a mental wall with designing the desert overworld. I may have to suspend Pic of the Week after Week 7 until I can get the ball rolling again.

I don't think the original 3D Mario games will translate very well into NSMB gameplay. As you can see from your video- there are a lot of blank empty spaces- and big defining characteristics of Bob-Omb Battlefield (like the Chain Chomp, and the winding mountain) don't have the same effect in NSMB. SM64 is a game about exploration while NSMB is a game that's strictly about platforming- so the level design isn't catered to the gameplay.

If you want to replicate 3D Mario levels in NSMB, I'd go for Super Mario 3D Land/Super Mario 3D World. They're designed to basically play just like NSMB levels anyway- and level design is probably more suited to NSMB.

If you're set on using levels from Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy you might want to try make some tilesets based on those games so people notice the visual cues that the environment pays homage to that particular game.

Definitely use zoom. Otherwise there's too many blind spots.

That looks amazing, all of it. That background is really well made, how was it done? It's very impressive. I think it would also be cool to see Yoshi play a bigger part in it, maybe a NPC? Anyway, I really like that emblem it uses the symmetry very well, it should be used as a icon for the game.

The background took a lot of time and many steps to make- I wish I would have made a time lapse while making it. The Yoshi Sphinx was ripped from a background in Mario Kart: Super Circuit, and I recoloured it and re-shaded it for NSMB. The sky uses a simple gradient from red to yellow, which unfortunately didn't import into the ROM properly so I had to edit the background tile-by-tile in the 2D Texture Editor. The sand in the bottom layer was made up of a basic noise effect that I blurred to make the appearance of grainy sand.

The sand in the top layer was a long process. I drew a template for the shape of the hills. And added the shading manually. Then I made the image transparent. I found a sandy texture online and I re-sized it so it would loop perfectly for every 128x128 block. I then placed the texture behind by shaded hills I made, and to make the texture appear less repetitive I warped the texture to give it a ripple effect. Then I flattened the image, merging everything together, and made adjustments to colour and saturation until I was happy with it.

The emblem was very easy to make. The patterns I designed to compliment the Mushroom and Lemniscate only took me about 40 seconds to create, and the only setback I had importing it into the game was that the Lemniscate was slightly too big to fit in the boundaries of the Boo image, which was easily solved by slightly altering the design.

Rest assured, this is a tentative background. Since the image was taken the background has been altered to produce a night time effect, which I think works best for Snow areas. You may notice that this is the first time I've ever made use of the zoom sprite. I wasn't going to use it originally, but there was a problem in the testing phase which made most of the jumps in this particular spot blind. Even with the zoom sprite, this is still a rather challenging point of interest. Mario better watch out!

EDIT: Also, ever notice that in many of my posted screenshots Mario's walking left? What's up with that?

Looks like Mario's traveled so far he's scaling mountains! In this area, you'll come across Bullet Bills, Whomps, Mushrooms, Spinies, and more! I first used this background in Bugfix v1.2 of my second hack, New Super Mario Bros. 5: Clone Tag Team, so I thought it would be alright to bring it back, however it wasn't my original choice. I wanted the mountains background from New Super Mario Bros. Wii but I couldn't find a good enough background rip. You'll notice that in this version of the background, the sky has been recoloured aqua-green, in an attempt to differentiate it from Clone Tag Team's.

By the way, we're getting ever closer to the demo release! I have officially finished all of the map that there is to tread in the demo. There's a total of 106 screens of the overworld to explore, which equates of only 5.2% of the full overworld, and that's not including all the areas that aren't even part of the overworld! I'd say that this is only about 3% of the content that will be in the full game, but that's just an estimation. I can't release the demo yet. There's still a few hurdles to overcome before it's ready- but it's time I gave a real update.

EDIT: Oh, and I'll be uploading a complete playthrough video of the demo when it's released to showcase the open world concept. I'm hoping it'll make things more clear to people who haven't fully grasped the concept yet.

Since we've all been so talkative around here, have something else to fuel the conversation. The Snow background has been edited to take place at night now- I think it fits better for snow levels to take place at night. Daytime snow levels are too bright, in my opinion.

Yeah, that's all I've got this week.

Another Mountain preview, this time you can see that I've modified the moving mushroom graphics to account for the post-NSMBDS art direction. I'm not gonna lie- I was hoping to have the demo ready at this point. For the most part, I've gotten everything ready to release, but I seem to have this curse with music hacking, so I've looked to  STORMENT for assistance once again. This was the last screenshot I had reserved before the release of the demo, but I can produce a few more weeks worth if I have to- Pic of the Week is surprisingly difficult to keep up with.
