it's always the very first thing in the rom when you use a hex editor actually. well, it is a header after all. NSMBe seems to only care about the "A2DE" (if using US rom) part (NewerDS changes everything else and opens just fine) so I think offsets 0xC to 0xF are the only things you have to change.

Oh then no wonder it didn't work. That's the ROM for the European Kiosk Demo. Kiosk Demo ROMs don't work, you should use full version roms. American version is recommended.

sounds like whatever custom music you inserted takes too much space and there's not enough left to load the sfx. you need to make it smaller.

Yes, go to tile sets, select the tile set your using, then select tile behaviors tab, select a tile, change the tile to a "harmful tile", then select Instant Kill property

Yes, click the "in shell" option with a regular koopa.

You could probably make lava/poison water rise quickly from the bottom of the stage (or even from below the view) when an event is triggered.

I know it's stupid to ask a question and then answer it myself, but after thinking about it more I figured the best way would be to set one of the tile god blocks as an instakill block and then cover the screen in it. I may use rising lava because it's more elegant, not sure.
