Ever since I applied for admin, I haven't had time to spare so I've accomplished pretty much nothing. Which's ironical considering before I got into my current school I had loads of free time, to the point I had nothing to do. Oh well.

One thing that takes no extra time is discussing things, which's something we can do.


So. We have had several calls to do something about the CR in the past, but nobody was able to take ahold of the project. To be frank, there are two things that would stall the project even with all the motivation we could muster:

-nobody is invested, because this "project" has virtually no identity. people are only compelled to work on it because it's there.
the hack has nothing to show for itself: there is no good thread summing up its progress, its advantadges and the general to-do list. it's either a blurry mess or just up in the air.
which leads to my second point:

-the way the project is managed is.. bad.
a lot more stuff is up in the air. there were a bunch of suggestions, ranging from what music should be used in the game to what ASM hacks should be used in the hack. all of that was left to rot. that's not acceptable by any standards of what would be a project actually ran by an invested party.
for example, a music thread was made with an envisioned "ASM hack that would let us use streamed music directly". it became a collection of music candidates that maybe would work out. eventually as they piled up it had no point to be anymore. there's hardly any point just borrowing other games' music either remixes make sense, but if you want to hear the music straight from other games that bad.. just play those games.

the resources given are far from ideal. for example, the tilesets are honestly restricted. it's not easy to make them, but the maker of a tileset has to design it with expansion in mind or else you'll be hitting short ends rather quick.


I'm not here only to criticize. I'm laying the groundwork for some changes we can make happen, if there's any interest at all. I personally wouldn't mind if the project was discarded; if need be, we can compile whatever work was done into a smaller project to send it off.

I think the best way to approach this would be like any giant collab project there have been through out the past, it takes many working parts but most of all for someone to help guide the vision/goal.

Right now we know what not to do when it comes to handling projects like these and if you ask me, it involves throwing out all this past work and starting from scratch again.
Like you said the project managing is bad, there are too many conflicting ideas, and as the saying goes "a camel is a horse designed by a committee".

This is essentially the biggest problem, besides the obvious of having the community make levels, what's the real goal here?
Typically people make the blue print first before doing any actual building.

However, unlike in the past we're better equiped with tools and knowledge than we ever have before. We've definitely came a way and learned a thing or two from experience with things like Newer or just from growing up, and I do believe there's still a little intrest in this project because of that.

We just have to figure out where to go

If this was a call to action it was a very good one tbh, I'm more than willing to lend a hand in this even if it turns out to be a very small handful of us.

I've posted a couple levels for it in the original thread. I think you should ask MarioFanatic64 for it and we can try to revive it. I wouldn't mind making a few more stages for the game and I'd like to know what it looks like myself

more seriously, I don't think it's worth keeping this ghost alive, especially given the current overall activity level of NSMBHD, as well as its status (hi almost-always-dead board owner).

the CR is like SMG2.5 in that it has existed for ages, as a concept, but never got anything serious done beyond a bit of a base.


I hate to be a downer tho, so, this is going to be simple.

you want the CR to be an actual thing? form an actual team.

'community remix' can't really happen when there's hardly any community left.

It'd be a little while for me. I hardly have any spare time apart from work, school and responsibilities, and I'm already helping other people with their hacks. But yeah, I totally agree with Arisotura. Make a discord and form a team if you think we can form together and get some work done. I'd be willing to join it

alright, I'll make a simple call. if anybody's up to actually invest themselves into this long-term, manifest yourselves shortly. otherwise, the Community Remix will go straight to the archives.


if you cannot afford the time to work on it, please refrain. we can't take empty promises, and considering all the replies this thread got, there is nobody honestly interested.

in any case, if you want to work on a collaborative project, it doesn't need to be this one. you'd be better off making a project you can actually manage, where you can recruit people you want to work with.


that aside, does someone want me to compile the few levels done into a playable patch? I might throw in some extras, because why the fuck not. might as well make it mildly interesting to play.

considering the minuscule project scale, I reckon we should keep it down to just singleplayer. I'm not sure how I feel about starting a multiplayer campaign. you could do it better if you wanted in your own hacks with ASM, tilesets and whatnot.

I'll compile what we already have, you're free to add on to it if you feel like it. a couple more levels is nice, but I'll be frank.. it makes little difference on the on the long haul. it's unfinished one way or another.

I've thought this over, and I'm willing to start processing any progress we have and archiving the CR section shortly. I'm not going to let this pend much longer. if you want to contribute, it has to be now.

I'm late to the party since I'm not as active as I used to be, but I still have a few question and stuff.
Should the ressources (tilesets, backgrounds and code) be made free to use now that this is cancelled? I mean, else they're basically wasted. This might be a better thing to ask to those who actually made those ressources, however.
Also, I have compiled the levels and tilesets into a rom long ago. However, it only contains the levels that  MarioFanatic64 put in his post. Since, at some point, it seems he basically started ignoring all level submissions, should some of the levels that weren't officially accepted be added as well?
Oh, and sorry if I wasn't supposed to post here. I see this thread was added to the Hall of Fame, and such.

that's the thing. dirbaio made most of these, and while he most likely doesn't care you still need to ask. you can try to get ahold of him from the links on his website (linked on his profile) but the email address on his profile page is someone else's. don't know why that is, but we can't do anything about it.

When I talked with him on irc years ago about the tileset animations hack he made for this he said that people can use the stuff as they wish.
