Okay, so good news. I've cleaned up the sound_data folder, so not only will I be able to keep all 36 tracks, but the World Map sound effects have been restored, in addition to any other sound effect errors in-game.

The bad news- it cost me a Friday night.

Pic of the Week - Week 46

Some more underwater goodness. Game design has been slow lately, but I've been getting a bunch of other things out of the way. The new gameplay trailer will go up in about two weeks, showing off some Mountain, Beach, Underwater, Snow and Treehouse areas. You'll also be hearing each area's theme music for the first time.

A little throwback to the bridge level from the original Super Mario Bros.. Super Mario: Endless Earth was the first time I actually took advantage of the Jumping Cheep Cheeps so I figured I'd start by using a well-tested staple of almost every 2D Mario game.

Next week, instead of a Pic of the Week, I will be posting the new gameplay trailer. After that, there'll only be two Pic of the Weeks remaining before I've been doing this for a whole year.

I might have to show off a more recent implementation to celebrate it.

I am absolutely loving the tileset and music of that jungle area. Keep up the amazing work!

I'm very impressed of your level design. It looks very smooth and there aren't any places where you can criticize much.

I only noticed a few things:

  • That unused jungle FG effect doesn't fit to the NSMB2 forest tileset very well
  • In NSMB2 the foliage of the green trees is solid. In your case it's only solid on top, which could irritate a few people
  • The music at the beginning isn't fitting a mountains themed level very well
  • One block jumps

Otherwise this is absolutely awesome. Keep it up!

-Does anybody else feel this way? More feedback on this matter would be appreciated.
-I know there's a big difference with the NSMB2 tileset, but since I'm not really trying to emulate the tileset and just borrowed the graphics for my own interpretation, I don't think this is an issue.
-With the music, I wanted to give it a the feeling that it was a more 'sour' rendition of the jungle theme. I think I pulled that off, but if anyone else has any problems I might need to reconsider the music.
-I guess one block jumps don't bother me as much as it does to others on this board, but I feel that if it fits the context it's acceptable.

I don't mind the one block jumps, I think that it gives the player a good challenge. Nobody wants a easy blatant hack.

I don't mind either, but one block jump parts are quite boring IMO, maybe because they slow you down a bit.

I know a fiew people that do mind, tough.

With this out of the way, I agree the unused jungle FG effect doesn't fit the tileset so well, but it might depend your taste. And if you were to replace it, you would need to either find or create something fitting. Dunno were or how.

Did that Cheep Chomp just EAT A BLOOPER NANNY?

Btw Pic of the Week is a bit late this week because I was having technical difficulties. If you were following my twitter you would have caught it, though. Sorry!

Well, it's been a year since I started doing this. Time flies, doesn't it?

Here's a place where time moves even faster. Welcome to the Flower Fields. In this part of the Endless Earth, the time alternates from day to night depending on the mission you've selected. When you play around in the Flower Fields in the finished hack, you might notice that the Flower Fields change between day and night time.

And props to the guys who supply the Resource Forum, because without it this hack wouldn't be nearly as far along.

Ooh, well that idea be used in other parts of the hack, too? Or just this area?
Well, one thing I would suggest is rather than just using a semi-transparent black to fade it, you could maybe try mixing in a little blue or red into the overlay.

Only this area will have the Day/Night cycle. If I did it for all areas, I'd need more backgrounds than I can stuff into the ROM.

Would be cool though to have a slow transition from day to night as you play through the hack though.

Today Mario's trying his luck in an invisible block maze! That's all I got to say today.

Nice. Is the maze brick- thing from the NSMB2 tileset? I mean the bricks that make up the walls.

I think those blocks, as well as the background, are from New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
BTW, nice idea,  MarioFanatic64! I like your creativity. :D
