Today it's exactly been 4 years ago that I registrated on NSMBHD.
I want to share with you my NSMB Hacking history and my interpretation about the forum.

I was about 9 years old (2008) when I got my first Nintendo handheld, the DS Lite. My first game was NSMB DS. After a few times of playing, it became my favourite Mariogame and my favourite DS-game. One year later, I saw a boy from school who was playing a NSMB DS Hack. It was NSMB3 from SKJmin. The boy let me play that game sometimes. I really liked those new NSMB levels. I've thought for a long time it wasn't a hack, but a sort of beta version of a new game by Nintendo. I mean, the game contained new levels, but things like the World Map were as the same as in the original NSMB DS yet. I couldn't know the levels were from SMB3, because I had never seen anything of that game yet. :')

When my last school year at primary school started (2010-'11), that boy who had NSMB3 left this school. I was 11 years old. (Of course, the age whereupon people leave primary school will be different in other countries.) I found it a pity that I wasn't able to play NSMB3 anymore. Then a period I got back playing the original NSMB DS and other DS-games started. Much time later, I found out NSMB3 wasn't a Nintendo game, but a NSMB Hack! And SKJmin was the creator of that hack (I hadn't came to that conclusion earlier lol). My first thought after finding this out was: 'Oh my god! I want this too!' I started looking for something to make my own NSMB DS levels with. I don't know why, but it took a very long time before I finally found something. I guess I wasn't really good at googling stuff back then. Eventually, I found this site! I was so happy I was finally able to make custom NSMB levels myself.

I made my NSMBHD account during my first school year at secondary school (Nov 29th 2011). When I took a look through the 'NSMB Hacks' section, I saw hacks even more impressive than NSMB3 (sorry SKJmin), like New Super Hacker Bros (one of the hacks that really motivated me starting making a NSMB Hack too ).

If I had any problems with NSMBe, I posted a thread at the forum. But.. there was one little problem. This was my first year I had English at school. So back then, I had only a few months experience of English. I was almost 100% dependent on Google Translate. Sometimes this caused my posts to be not-understandable. Some examples:

Posted by KingYoshi
I can not edit the tilesets.
The example I can not "ropes" of W2 Tower to get to other tilesets.
Mario how to hang it is not the only problem, but the PNG of the ropes.
I also wanted to create a blue tube, and red and yellow mini-tubes.
But I can not. I understand nothing of what I post images from one tileset to another must do
how other "pictures" experience and add to tile sets, and how such a tube to a different color, and then add a tileset.

ah, I have unfortunately NSMB Wii.
I can maybe download it.
How to "rip" you do it?

Some of the questions I asked at the forum were actually kinda dumb, but yeah.. I was only 12 years old, my English was horrible and my ROM Hacking experience was 0%. But fortunately, I always got replies at my post when I had a problem with NSMB Hacking. I really appreciate people did their best understanding and helping me. I'm really thankful for the people who welcomed me here, like ray, Freeze, Dirbaio, StapleButter, Piranhaplant etc. And RiksKing of course, who was nearly the only Dutchman who was often online at the time. This board has become a important part of my childhood actually. I also don't interpret this place as just a forum for NSMB Hacking stuff. It's much more than that. We're a small community, but a lucky consequence of that is that members get to know each other faster than if there would be over 1,000 active users. Because of this, we get to know about what kind of people they are, which encourages the social interaction on this board in a positive way. There are many people here who talk about ordinary non-NSMB stuff too each other; at people's profile comments and at the General forums. (I hope you guys know what I mean )

The NSMBHD community has been a great place in those good old days.. as it still is. It's a shame we lost ray and Freeze, but that doesn't mean there aren't other people here who could become great hackers like them. There'll always be people joining and leaving this board (like at all boards). As long as we have the (still active) founders of NSMBHD and there's still interest at NSMB DS Hacking, this board will continue existing and the possibilities of NSMB Hacking will keep extending.

So, this is about converting NSBMD Models to OBJ. This is necessarily for Model Hacking, since there isn't an NSBMD Editor (at the moment). Anyway, the only program I know which can convert NSBMD to OBJ is MKDS Course Modifier. Unfortionately, its converter isn't that useful when converting complicated NSBMDs, like the Worldmaps. This is how it looks when converted w1.nsbmd to OBJ.

This is pretty messed up. It's fixable, but still..

But I was thinking:
The NSBMD Viewer of MKDSce is pretty good. When viewing an NSBMD model with it, all information of the model should be in your computer's RAM. Maybe it could be possible to make an OBJ of the NSBMD by using that info somehow.

Another idea could be seaching for a way to capture NSBMD models from emulators.

We also need to bring the coin counter next to the timer.

Mm.. Well, both coin counter and timer weren't always on that location during the whole 'NSMBDS building process'. In an old beta, those signs were on the bottom screen:

Another thing, it seems Nintendo wasn't going to use Star Coins at first. Maybe that's the reason why Mario was able to have three items in stock. I mean, you need Star Coins to buy Item Toad Houses. Maybe those Toad Houses also weren't implemented back then.

EDIT: Moving the coin counter and counter to the center would give problems with Mega Mario.

As you can see, while being Mega Mario, those signs aren't visible anymore.

So I have the SMW Overworld Theme with the instruments and loop markers. This is the file: grassland.mid
So when I drag it into or use cmd to convert it into a .sseq file, it would not create the file?

Any suggestions?

This *.zip file contains the newest version of midi2sseq.exe.

The fastest way to convert a *.mid to *.sseq is:

1.) Start Command Prompt (cmd.exe)
2.) Drag midi2sseq.exe to cmd
4.) Press space bar
5.) Drag the *.mid file to cmd
6.) Press space bar
7.) Drag the *.mid file to cmd again, but now replace ".mid" with ".sseq"!
8.) Press Enter

Done!

With this "dragging" method, you won't have to go to the right path anymore, which can spare you a lot of time few seconds.

*sigh*

Sometimes, I'm really thinking of rewriting this tutorial, since some parts are really outdated.

But for now:

Open the not hex-edited *.mid in Anvil Studio. Right after the final note plays, place the marker there and the program will record the time at which the marker is. Click EDIT -> Insert MIDI Event... . Under Kind Of Event, make sure both boxes have a check mark beside them, then look for "Marker" in the drop-down list. After you find it, you will just have a blank text box. Type loopEnd Now, this is the slightly difficult part.

Go to the point in the song where it loops to, and select it. Now, go to EDIT -> Insert MIDI Event... . Make sure you are using marker, BUT, look at the time. You need to peel off one frame so the loop will sound correctly. How do I do that? When looking at the time, It will go 29:30 (29 seconds, 30 frames.) to 30:00. Meaning that there are 30 frames in 1 second. So, if your time for the loop point is on an exact second, go to the previous second, and use 29 frames. Now, use the Marker loopStart. Remember that it is case sensitive. Keep in mind that you only have to do this on ONE track, and it saves you time. The revised MIDI2SSEQ is smart enough to place the loop point correctly on all tracks. Now, go FILE -> Export MIDI-Format 0 File... and save it to a directory. (source)

With this method, you won't have to hexedit anything! Now use the version of midi2sseq.exe I sent you. Then, go further with Step 7 of the first post's tutorial.

There you go.

You guys also should have been in the RVlution Skype group last night. Some NSMBHD users, including LimitedLime and me were also there. It turned into a "LimitedLime Roast group". He claimed that he was just trying to be funny. Then he started spamming the chat, so he got kicked out. After that he started one-on-one chatting with a random Rvlution user and said to him that he would pay him £15 to get back into the Rvlution chat. Then he sent him an e-mail wherein he pretended he had sent £15 via PayPal. The Rvlution guy said it's illegal to pretend to said money and he would call the police if he didn't get that money. LimitedLime replied he's 10 years old, and claimed boys with that age don't have money (er.. Wat?). Anyway, the Rvlution guy said that he was going to call the police. Then, LimitedLime stopped talking xD.

(If I have forgotten to mention something of this Skype thing, Thierry will tell you that ).

FYI
The names were made by the EMPLOYEE'S THEMSELVES so BLAME THEM!

...

"Blame them"? Blame yourself. If you don't like the name, then why do you use that name instead of thinking of a name by yourself? (like everyone does)

My employees wanted to have better names, but THEY are uncreative as shit.

Good day, and good bye...

This is pretty familiar to something that happened like 1½ month ago..

Anyway, I'd like to say that we won't forget you, but I don't think there's many people here that actually know who you are.

However, because of all those cool unique things you did, like your original NSMB hack's title (which wasn't even created by you) and using the Wiki to share your hack instead of a thread, etc., I'm sure people who have seen your threads and posts (and Wiki page ) will remember you as a really cool person.

If you ever decide to come back to NSMBHD, you're more than welcome.

It would be cool if there was the possibility to edit your levels online. It should be a bit like Google Documents, which allows two or more people to edit things at the doc at the same time. With 'NSMBe Online Support', you should be able to do edit levels with two or more people.
