Also if you want to test your hacks you have to use an Emulator or you can play it with a Flashcard on a real DS!
Good Emulators are:

-DeSmuME (Good quality,but slow if your PC isnt good)
-No$GBA (Not so good quality,graphical bugs,but fast if your PC isnt good enough for DeSmuME)

3D modelling? Isn't NSMBDS 2D? Although it uses some 3D models, Like the overworld. Also I can do custom music. But I don't think I'll need them.
ASM hacking you say? Which simulator should I use? I know the DS is compiled in ARM but I don't know what tool I'll use for the ASM hacking.

Yeah in general NSMB is in 2D but if you take a look on some sprites and other things you'll see that some things are 3D models.
(Example: Mario, Dry Bones, Bowser Jr. ... are 3D models / Goomba, Koopa ... are 2D)
Of course also the World Map and some other things.If you hack SM64DS you probably have some knowledge in 3D modelling.

For ASM you need DevkitPro and the ASM Hacking Project Template.

Also the tilesets here are limited I am trying to edit 1-1 but it doesn't have all the tiles, do they rely on specific level banks? Also is there a way to use custom tilsets?

In the Level editing screen go to the palette icon that says "level config" then go to the graphics tab and you can change the tileset.
For Custom Tilesets open NSMBe, go to the Tileset Tab.If you downloaded a tileset here you can click import, or double click a tileset to edit it.On the tab graphics you can import your own graphics.On the Map16 tab you have to drag all your graphical tiles to the left side.The Tile Behaiviours let you edit how the tiles work. (collision, non collision, ice...)
Go to Objects Tab to make objects with the tiles that you can place/use with the editor.
If you dont understand something look at the original ones.

BTW We dont have a Custom Tileset Tutorial there ...

1. There's one file contain the icons. Can't remember which one... sorry!

4. For Progress Paths, you don't have to do anything with them.
For Paths, Value 1 is used for "speed" for Sprite 218. Value 3 is somehow like a "acceleration" somehow. Set both to zero when you want the auto-scrolling to be stopped.
Value 1 and 3 is somehow controls speed and bouncing level for Sprite 269.
There's a lot more sprites to use with paths, but I forgot them.
5. Jyotyu? Object 1 prevents the camera to span into that entire 16x16 block in the level editor where the object is placed. Ignore the others, as I may wish you to.
6. I don't know this... sorry.
7. Someone has answered that, I believed.
8. You mean the loop? It only works in the final castle AFAIK. It's something hardcoded.

Aww, sorry for misunderstanding. The camera spin is also W8-Final Castle exclusive. It's somehow hard-coded function that only works in that level.

About the quicksand.

If I edit the desert tileset bitmap but leave the quicksand as it was, the quicksand won't be corrupted right?

Also, I would like to know how NSMB direct the quicksand animation in nsbtx in polygon_unit to the desert tileset slot in that quicksand object. Learning about this could help me more.

Furthermore, if I want to edit the quicksand, AFAIK I just need to edit them in polygon_unit folder right? No more files associate with it right?
