This is the first time I am presenting anything from my hack to the NSMBHD community. The hack has no name at the moment, but there is one level I wanted to share with you all.

Metro Kingdom - New Donk City
I recreated New Donk City from Super Mario Oddysey in NSMB. Heres a look at the level.

I am excited to show off more of the game in the future.

The idea of this level is really cool, but in my opinion the modern Mario model and the retro graphics of everything else just dont match.
If your game isnt intended as completely retro styled, i recommend to change the pipe graphic to a retro style. This would look much better than a retro level and one modern pipe.
If you wanna make a retro styled hack with every level in retro style, you should try to change the Mario model (and probably the enemy sprites too). But I don't know if and how this works.

But all in all i can say: keep going! The graphics themselve look really good and the level looks interesting.

Thank you so much for feedback! The pipes are temporarily as I can't figure out how to create custom pipes, when I do it, Mario is on top of the sprite when he goes down the pipe. (Any help on this anyone?).

The game has some 3D levels and some 2D levels, to mix up the experience so many of the 3D objects in the level will change in near future.

Again, thanks for feedback

I'm lost to why you decided to use nsmb ds. From my perspective choosing nsmb wii or smw would be more beneficial. I don't see the nsmb ds element you're trying to keep. SMW has way more support if you want to build a 2d mario game (nsmb ds is 2.5d), and nsmbWii has more ability for events and sprites.

Not trying to be rude, just don't want you putting more work on yourself for no reason.

I didn't quite understand, so you mean the level design works better on SMW or SM Wii? Keep in mind that the pictures I shared is early in development.

Im saying that there are different advantages to which game you edit. SMW and SM Wii have more qualities for the rom hack that you are making in my opinion. SMW is meant for 2d and SM Wii has more options.

Already mentioned in a post above that this game has 3D levels and SOME 2D levels to mix up the gameplay experience. I am sticking to NSMBDS for multiple reasons. Won't let my flashcard go to waste.

That is fine. Just wanted to inform you on your options. I don't understand what 3D levels mean tho.

Thanks for the feedback either way (:

I admire your devotion to this.

I'm not too fond of the graphics, but I guess there's not much you can do. You're trying, alone, to recreate 3D stages into 2D. Even putting graphics aside you can't do much, especially in the case of Odyssey.

Honestly, Odyssey-related hacks won't get far IMO.
3D hacks would just be a downgrade of the actual game, and 2D hacks will most likely turn out wierd and somewhat bland. Because it's not actual 2D level design, just recreation of 3D stages.

Anyway, I have a question. Is the whole hack going to be a recreation of the Odyssey stages? Because if it's just one or two levels, honestly it's no big deal.

Sorry if I'm disappointing you with all I said, but critism is important.

SM63 is proof of how much you can do by putting 3D stages in 3D. I think this hack is promising, but the graphics do clash a lot.

SM63 had a lot of freedom compared to NSMB.
And honestly, SM64 has a stage design that simply works in 2D if done well (peach's castle being a good example). I can't say the same for Odyssey.
You can't just pick something refined for 3D to that extent and expect it to work in 2D.

Of course, but said freedom isn't impossible to achieve in NSMB. However, I guess you're right with that second point.

So after a lot of thinking back and forth I finally came to the conclution to just re-do the Whole Level in 3D

Heres some pictures of the progress so far.

Yeah, that backround looks much better than the MS paint from the original.

Also, doesn't this belong in 'New Hacks'?

The hack isn't enough developed to be called a new hack yet, and I am not ready to fully show it off.

3d effect made that look 10 times better! I can see this being a great hack if you stick with it!
