Ok.

Edit: Sorry if you were expecting an elaborate response.

If a collect-a-thon 3D Mario game gets revealed in the NX trailer I will upload a low-res version of the current progress of Endless Earth's open world. Seriously.

Holy shit. Do you live in the AEST time zone? Cause it'll be about 1:30am here by the time you do that. Lol.
Also, are you using a modified version of the editor to display the entire map at once?

Yes, AEST.

It is a map made out of editor screenshots all combined into one mega-image, resolution 16128x8192.

If I do post the current progress, it will be scaled down to 945x480, to show off the size without revealing too much.

If it doesn't happen today, rest assured that the finished open world will be shown off by the end of the year anyway.

EDIT: Welp, there was a 3D Mario in there, so I better keep my word...

I'd say that this looks like a Mario Maker level, but it has slopes.

Not only that, but also the NSMBDS koopas, piranha plant, Mario and brick.

Also, slopes FTW.

Congratulations. You cannot distinguish the difference between 2D and 3D assets.

Implementing a real 3D goomba would be no problem.

In fact, spoilers: I already have.

I invite you to just copypaste Mega Goomba model onto something and get it working like a real Goomba.

Well if Nintendo did it before they switched to a 2D goomba, then surely you can do it too

EDIT: i just realized what you actually meant by "i already have", totally forgot about the big splitting goomba sprite you made a while ago...

You don't know how much it would lag with all these 3D Goombas.

Will endless earth have metroidvania-like gameplay with powerups (or switches?) instead of upgrades?

Kinda.

It's difficult to make areas that you can only access with a certain item or form while keeping the world free to roam, so there isn't any 'come back when you have x' spots in the overworld. However, to add linear progression to the game, there is only ever one fortress open at a time. When you beat one fortress and move on to the next mission, a new fortress will open up and the game is beaten by beating all eight fortresses in order.

The fortresses have much more traditional Mario level design, but I am going to keep the exploration factor in the mix with metroidvania tropes like you mentioned and also multiple pathways to take. Each fortress will have a central puzzle-based theme to it.

There are also spots in the overworld that you can only reach if you have a certain power-up or hit a switch somewhere, but you're rewarded with something like a Power Star or a 1-Up. I don't think it would be fair to make the player hunt around for a really long time, only to find something that they need to progress through the game, and that they need to go do something else and come back later.
