This hack isn't 100% finished but there's a DEMO available with 2 full Worlds and other cool stuff, DOWNLOAD V1.2.

Super Mario Bros. The Missing Lands is a New Super Mario Bros. DS Rom Hack that I've working on for a while and that I'm putting a lot of effort and dedication .

This hack will have the same worlds as in the original NSMB but redesigned in my own way, as well as introducing cool gimmicks and mechanics, fun challenges, renewed graphics, custom music, and other cool stuff. This hack also includes new features such as:

- Star Coins are now replaced by "Ztar Coins" which are located in risky and/or hidden places
- Towers are replaced by castles and castles are replaced by airships (like in SMB3)
- Mario and Luigi are now capless at 99 lifes (like in NSMBWii)

This hack has a medium difficulty, it's neither easy nor hard, if you're a noob, maybe 100%-ing this hack will be a tough task for you, but if you're an experienced player, you shouldn't have any issue, however, I can guarantee that you'll have a lot of fun when playing this

Well, enough talk, let's move on to the screenshots (SPOILER ALERT)

DEMO TRAILER

Total levels completed: 26/80

This game is still in progress, so please, don't ask me for download links, a download link will be provided once the hack is finished, so be patient. Anyway, if you would like to see progress of the hack, you can always check out my YouTube channel by clicking here, or join the NSMB Central Discord. Also, this post will get eventually updated as I progress, so, stay tuned

As the title says, in this tutorial, I will explain how to make a custom background using NitroPaint, this tool can help you create graphics for Nintendo DS games, you can create NCG's, NCL's, NSBTX's and many other things, but in this specific tutorial, I will be covering background creation. You can download NitroPaint by clicking here.

As usual, you have to make your custom background and make sure it's 512x512 pixels in size, for this specific tutorial, I will use a custom background made by  JPG64 as an example

If you import this background in NSMBe, it'll look like this:

And this how it looks when you use Dirbaio's Tiler:

As you can notice, the background looks really terrible with both methods, now let's see the magic of NitroPaint.

Open NitroPaint and click File --> New --> New BG

Then, click on the three dots at the top right corner and select your background image, after that, you must set the following settings:

Palettes: 1 (You can use two palettes if you want, but you'll get a much faster conversion when using only one palette, and according to Garhoogin, there's a bug regarding the output file, so it's best to use one palette)
Base: 0
Size: 256
Offset: 0
Depth: 8 bit
Tile Base: 256 if it's a top background, and/or 576 if it's a bottom background
Max characters: 320

Also, make sure to select "Raw compressed" in the format drop-down, and make sure to tick the "compress" button in the palette settings (When you enable this setting, the background generator will combine identical tiles to save graphics space, utilizing the horizontal and vertical flip properties of background tiles, kinda like you can do in map16).

You could alternatively enable dithering to save some quality in case your background has too many details or gradients, but this depends on a case by case basis.

Here's a screenshot of how the settings should be:

After that, click on "Generate" and the background will start creating, once it's created, it'll generate the bitmap, the palette and the tilemap, which are the files from which the background is made of

(Click the image if it's too small)

It's very important to know the concept of these because you'll need to replace these files later in NSMBe, the bitmap are the tiles the background is made of, the palette are the colors used by said tiles and the tilemap is the background built with the bitmap tiles.

Now, in the background screen, you must select everything, uncheck the "character" box, select palette 08 if it's a top bg or palette 10 if it's a bottom bg, and click "Add", this way you'll be setting the background the way NSMBe expects to load it, though, it'll appear completely black in NitroPaint, this is completely normal

After this, save all of the files in their corresponding formats ("ncl.bin", "ncg.bin" and "nsc.bin")

Now it's time to replace these files in NSMBe, look for the background you want to replace, and locate its files in the ROM File Browser Tab, you can easily locate your background files by clicking on "Edit Properties" and noting the file IDs shown in the bg properties menu, you could alternatively take a look at this list to easily locate the background you want to replace, the files are in the "BG_ncg", "BG_ncl" and "BG_nsc" folders, the files you're looking for should have the same names across the different folders but with different file extensions, they also have key names:

Free: Top background
Back: Bottom background

Expand these folders, find the respective graphics and replace the NCL, NCG and NSC of the background with the ones you made in Nitro Paint.

Important: For some reason, when you replace the NCL file, it'll get descompressed, make sure to LZ compress it again after you've replaced it.

Now, open your background in NSMBe and take a look at the final results:

Voila! Not bad eh? Much better than when using Dirbaio's Tiler .

With this method you can make good-looking backgrounds without having to worry about their quality being downgraded by the awful tiler, however, don't expect this to always work, if your background has way too many tiles, it is very likely that you'll get undesired results or some quality losses, make sure to not make very detailed bgackgrounds.

I really hope this tutorial will be useful for many people, this may look complicated but it's way easier than you think, I sincerely apologize if this tutorial was not very understandable or had any flaws, I'm not very good at writting tutorials , if anyone thinks this tutorial can be better phrased, just let me know and I'll probably update this post, and if you don't understand anything, feel free to ask in this thread .

Credits:

-Garhoogin for creating NitroPaint and taking the patience of explaining me the background making procedure
- JPG64 for making the background I used for this tutorial
- Keeper for clarifying a doubt and encouraging me to write this tutorial

If your backgrounds are poor quality in NSMBe it's very likely that they have too much details, backgrounds in NSMB are made of a certain amount of tiles, if your custom background exceeds that amount of tiles, NSMBe will try to reduce them causing some quality loss, the best ways I know of improving their quality is making your background less detailed, more repetitive and try to avoid gradients, a technique I recommend is reducing your bg size to 256x256, copy and paste it in the remaining space.

iirc, some backgrounds in Super Mario: Endless Earth were tiled manually, hence why they're high quality

Well, something I noticed regarding the jyotyu tileset is that this spot here (marked in red) seems to be restricted, if you place something there, it won't show up in game no matter where you place it on Map16

Also, whatever you place here is what will show up when you break the flagpole with Mega Mario, this may seem a little obvious, but I initially thought those broken flagpole tiles were just decorative

Normally, if you have a Mega Mushroom in your sub-item box and collect any other powerup, the Mega Mushroom won't be replaced unless you get rid of it, but if you groundpound on a blue koopa, the blue shell will replace the Mega Mushroom in the sub-item box.

That's probably all the info I have, sorry if there are any grammar mistakes

I tested on both the USA and European versions and the springboard seems to behave differently and a bit weird, in the European version, the springboards psysics are affected by the stone walls, but in the USA version sometimes they are and sometimes they aren't, also, I don't know if it's worth mentioning this, but the springboard gets crushed only if you throw it, here's an example comparison video:

And here's the level in case you want to take a peek

Some more ports, this time I'll be posting all the tower tilesets from NSMBU. The tilesets are extended to 256x176, which means that, in order to use these tilesets to their fullest potential, you will need the SubNohara V2 code hack, you also won't be able to use SubNohara in conjunction with these tilesets. Credits to Random Talkin Bush for the rips

I have the same problem on 39: Tower tileset (it became Newer SMB Airship), with some tiles being like conveyor belts. I changed tiles many times, but it still doens't work. What do I do?

I had that problem too, the same happens with Castle tilesets, I tried moving the tilesets to different slots in map16 but it didn't work, I also tried importing a tileset with conveyor belts and I tried to put the belts in the same places as in the original, both in map16 and in object editor but it didn't work either

How do you even make those backgrounds? They're great! also the rushing rapids one is still a little too.. light. if you could make the leaf colors match the tileset palette a little more, i think it would look better.

Most of these backgrounds are combinations of some parts taken from other backgrounds, and others of them are images that I get from the internet and I rearrange them so that they fit well :) (I really hate when people upload fake transparent images).

As for your request, let me see if I can fix the grass in the background a little, I made it that color so it would match the vines.

Edit: I tried to make the grass darker and also added some "hot dogs", but it looks a little bit ugly in game

Give me your opinions  crook

Edit 2: I made some backgrounds, I need to hear your opinions

This background is an adaptation of some jungle tilesets from "Contra 4"

A Peach Castle BG as requested, I don't think it looks good anyway, also, I tried this background in game and it looks glitchy...

Hot Dogs!!! >:)

A background meant to be Peach Castle or Rushing Rapids bottom background, lost a little bit of quality in game but is still manageable :P

What do you think? Tell me if you want me to change or improve something.

What do you think about this background?

It's a background that I ripped from "Donkey Kong: Jungle Climber", I thought we could use it for Snowy Savannah.

also a rainbow road tileset, and a city tileset?

I was just going to ask you if I could make a city tileset, I'll start making them tomorrow.

As for the rainbow tileset, what would you like to see included in the tileset?
