NSML is on hold for an undefined amount of time. Don't ask how long. It might happen. Or not. You will see.

A NSMB 2 Hack

Welcome to my NSML-Thread!

This project aims to be a sequel to the 2012 released New Super Mario Bros. 2. Most critics about the game were very bad, because it lacked new ideas and concepts and the fact that most of the graphics and music were recycled from NSMBW. I'd like to make something fresh and innovative from the engine by adding new world themes, graphics and music.

Currently I'm thinking about which world theme will be the first I'll work on. If you'd like to take part on that decision, vote here: http://strawpoll.me/7133330

I'll add a few screenshots about already existing levels here soon.

Old Post about the initial project for the first NSMB

Nice graphics, stuff and ASM hacks. Seems very good and very nicely done.

IMO, the only 'bad' thing is this:

EDIT: From the video, I can tell you some places looks a lot like the ones in the original game.

2:05 Reminds me of 1-1 and 5-1

The others were probably just impressions of mine.

1:33 I think you got a little bit inspired by my world 5, is that right?

All in all it looks really great! I don't like that style of graphics (but that's just me) and as far as I can see that the shadow level and the tower looking best!

With graphics I mean that you use the standard jyotyu tileset. ?-Blocks and brick blocks and yeah, I don't like the ones from NSMB

Actually no. I got inspired by NSMB2 Star-1.

Thanks for the response

Do you only not like thy jyotyu tileset or all tilesets shown in the trailer?

And I don't think that I'll change the jyotyu tiles (unless I'll find something realy awsome). Also I don't like to use Wii tilesets, because they don't look that good on a small screen like the DS has. I like to use somehow simpler ones.

Edit: Added 3 screenshots

Well yeah, that doesn't look good. I'd say, either spend a while to make a properly resized version (this looks like it was just thrown in MSPaint and stretched), or keep it at its original size.

It looks like that because it is actually a 3D model, which replaces the rect spinner, so I can pop the text up with an activator id. And you know how difficult it is to create an apropriate 3D model with texture

But I'll recreate it. Don't worry

Sooo... it's still early ofcourse, and I'm really only speaking about the screenshots here, but...
that looks really impressive.
And when I say "impressive", I mean impressive in the manner that I'm almost sad that I quit on music hacking for you, just so my name could be in the credits .

So based from the pictures:

- The Northern Lights background is just beautiful. I know this probably isn't possible, but I can't imagine that background be unanimated, if the colors moved in waves very slowly. And this is a ridicilous thing to ask, so I'm not, and the background is pretty enough as is
- I think I've asked this in your profile too, and I'd like to know if the desert/African is based off Donkey Kong Country Returns. Also here, the background is absolutely stunning.

This hack is a very good example of how advanced NSMB Hacking has become over the years to me. ASM Hacking used to be rare (wait, it still is) and even hacks that did have them didn't have more than 2 most of the time. The shop looks nice even though I feel like the shell should cost less than the mega mushroom and the lowest item price should be higher (in my opinion).
Also, I actually don't have a problem with the font in the switch palace. I remember another font just like that one and liking it as well, but I can't put my finger on it.

So, I wish you the best of luck with this. It might be worth noting that aside from Endless Earth, I haven't been really thrilled to play a NSMB hack since my return, but this hack actually does. Good job!

Wow, thanks for that nice feedback

And yes, the beach area is inspired by DKCR.

Do you realy think, that 150 Coins are too less for a fireflower? I mean, playing a regular level gives you circa 50-75 coins. So you have to play 2 to 3 levels to get a fireflower.

I guess it's just the way I play the game. I'm one of those guys that played through the main game while trying to break every block (addicting ) and find hidden area's etc. So when I was done with a level I'd usually have more then 100 coins. I just feel like the shop should be more expensive for that sense of, uhm, accomplishment is probably the best way to call it. When power-ups become more rare, (expensive) I always feel good about myself when I finally saved up for example 200 coins to finally get a power-up to maybe finish that level that I've been stuck on.

When I compare this to like Zelda Ocarina of Time where you can find Rupees underwater, in bushes, and inside enemies. In NSMB, coins are pretty much scattered everywhere. Now let's say you buy a fairy in Ocarina of time, which is IIRC 100 Rupees. A fairy is basically a 1-up because it allows you to live again. And, while rare, these things can be found in the overworld as well as in NSMB where you can find powerups everywhere. While this may be a bad analogy because Zelda and Mario are totally different games, I hope my opinion came across

On the other side of the spectrum, the shop may become totally useless if the prices are too high. Eventually players will just play the level and get their power-ups there. So in hindsight, 150 rupees might not be as lackluster as I thought it was. But, even though I don't like grinding, I would like it (but this isn't your fault at all, a lot of the 2D Mario titles do this) if power-ups became more rare.

EDIT: Alright, I looked it up and I found that the price for fairies is actually 50 Rupees, which makes my 2nd paragraph completely fall apart . Still though, my point of 'accomplishment' is still one I stand by

I agree, this is excellent. Continue like this
I like the shop idea too, just a question, is the 1up block in there cpntaining 3 of them?

Yes it is. It is very easy for me to change the offers and prices, so you can suggest new ones if you like to

Maybe make a rectangle in SketchUp and apply a texture to it for the Switch Palace's text box.

That was exactly that what I did.

...Oh. I thought that by 3D model you meant the text and not the actual box. Sorry

But yeah, it looks resized.
