It sounds like the vertical platform is higher than the piranha plant when it spawns, so it falls in the pit. If you're placing the sprite directly above the platform, instead place it above the highest point of the platform's path. This should ensure it always spawns above the platform.

If that doesn't work,  Baby Bowser's suggestion sounds like a good idea.

Sometimes I just make something from scratch (question block from my SMW hack) or from a game screen (red ball from Brawl). Sometimes I do both, finding something from Google and then edit it (Tepig). I've never just found a thing on Google and used it unedited.

EDIT: Also I can't actually multivote? I voted for one and then voted for the other and it took away my first vote.

I'm pretty picky when it comes to graphics, and it's pretty hard to make tilesets that fit NSMB's style. That's why I like Wii tilesets, because they're already the same style.

I made two levels but I didn't write down the codes. Honestly, they weren't that great to begin with; I was just tinkering with it while I unlock new stuff.

Also this thing really needs slopes.
