Now that question is a little dumb.
Ofc I want to ditch it badly, but I can't change the fact that the project I work on uses Discord for communication and most there are against using something else. I nuked or archived all of my own previous servers, left all that are not entirely necessary and told multiple people I have contact to on other platforms to use those. And saying "It's a good idea" is being generous. the 'good idea' in it is being a chat system. that's about it. for the rest: * centralized. auth server goes down, all of it is down. get in trouble with the staff, banned from everywhere. etc. * locked down. you are only allowed to use the default client, which is a Hipsterweb powered app (it's really just a UI-less Chrome running the web interface). * messages are fucking huge. maybe that can be changed but idk. * did I say it's running off Chrome? Chrome is bad. for a chat system that retains the 'good idea' without all the shitty aspects, take a look at that weird old thing that is called IRC plus, you can probably run 10 IRC clients or more before you reach the resource usage of one Discord client instance (or of any web browser for that matter) also RicBent, does your team have any actual arguments for sticking to Discord? I'm not even mad about the fact that my account was reported and then banned. My problem comes in where I try to get in contact with them to try and explain the situation, and they completely ignore me. It's like their Support Team doesn't even exist other than to send out bot messages that say "Your message is very important to us".
I probably ruined any chance of getting my account unbanned by now for emailing and tweeting at them constantly, but I wouldn't have done that if someone had reached out and actually took what I said into consideration. It only got worse for me when I heard how most of their staff treat situations like this. And I can't even leave as nearly all of my friends online use it on a regular basis. All of SMBNext's development currently takes place there as well, and most of them don't want to go through the pain of migrating to a whole new messaging system despite how most of them were treated the same as me. I just really wish that something more could be done about the situation as I had absolutely no idea the raids were happening in the first place and had no part in them whatsoever. |

Posted by Ndymario If Discord sucks, then why use it because other apps out there suck more. the reason it works is because it's a better deal than the others, and it hit right on cue as people were getting sick of those. thier advertizement was literally "give up skype/teamspeak". the main issue discussed in this thread is the likes of important staff members being toxic. the business model of discord as a centralized app doesn't please anyone who actually cares, but it gives them full control and ownership. so they're not giving it up for anything. the app itself is fine if you ignore the technical aspect, and works to the point of gathering some absolute Discord fanboys. technically speaking it's not coded great, but few people care about that when high end computers are getting literally mandatory for regular stuff like browsing. Yea you can change it, you can make it look like an IRC layout by going to settings -> Appearance -> Then set the view to compact I know nobody who uses it on a regular basis. your customisation options are more limited than should be, regardless. any mods are against thier oh-so-holy terms of service that can get you banned if you dare let word be heard of you using fully clientside addons for yourself because you care about your bloody eyes. everything about discord styling is limited, like the grand total of two themes to pick from. feels as though they cannot make any on thier own because anybody who cares left long ago. now, IRC is nice and all but it doesn't compare to Discord in terms of, say, commercialization and (some) features. sending images and files is a simple example of that, you can upload them manually for IRC but it's only the same result with more effort. you get more control over your stuff, sure, but again the average people don't care. |

sending images might be simpler in Discord but that's another example of "easier, less responsibility".
then you end up with those discordcdn URLs that will inevitably expire, or get deleted upon the whims of some staff member, or whatever not a problem when you're posting some random image on a whim, but it's an issue for archival or for posting more permanent things (like, reposting your content to some messageboard), where you'd better be in control of your content and where it's hosted _________________________ Kuribo64 - zrghij |

Discord is terrible anyhow. I've been saying it for some time and no one listened to me until this, something that has directly impacted the community, happened. it happens to every IM. they get a monopoly of some sort then start abusing. sure; discord has POTENTIAL competition but currently they're nowhere near as close as dsicord the fact discord have treated early supporters like this is pathetic. and typical. also actual issue people are not dealt with like pedophiles - I won't name a certain somebody (and it's not the person some may assume I mean because of 2017, I'm talking about someone else), and others who are actually a threat - but they ban people innocently? wtf? and what makes it worse is that gimzie got an unban and he was the only one actually rioting... fucking bullshit moderation from them (oh and this is jamie, if you can't tell. pointless me asking to be unbanned when a) i shat on the board earlier so uh. No and b) i only would have responded to this and left) (as for the username here it's a feeder song, lol) |

sounds to me like allthefoxes unbans those that "own up to thier mistakes" and leave those that "put up an attitude" to rot.
doesn't matter if the latter are innocent and rightfully defending themselves. allthefoxes judges with his fucking gut feeling. |

yeah ok discord is stupid and does some dumb shit but its chat interface and features blow literally everything else out of the water
IRC is fine, sure, but discord has the perks of you being able to upload shit, have roles and whatnot, voice and video chat, etc. Really there are just way more possibilities. Oh, and Discord lets you view messages that you miss when you're not online, basically the main reason I'd vouch for it over IRC. I don't know what servers you guys are in where raids resulting in mass bans are a common occurance, but nothing anything like that has happened to me or anyone I know. If something better came along, yeah, maybe I'd switch, but Discord is pretty much the best there is right now. _________________________ hey look, I did a thing |

we realize. IRC isn't meant to be competition for discord, but it does have the basic form of roles. having a bouncer fixes the logs issue, as well as the need to log in and out. otherwise, people would've let it go already.
Discord is a success where company-based chat apps fails. I was myself supportive of them until the recent updates where it tries to emulate steam by having a game library of its own, and the blaring issues came to light. i.e. the extremely high amount of data they scrap off you and then sell, as well as the toxic staff members cornering you out of nowhere. from the start it seemed too good to be true, because we're used to company-based apps that never fail to disappoint. |
