Well for now, I'm laying the bases out. Went with C++ and Qt, but might switch back to C# (QtCreator is derp, and getting Qt to work with VS is probably a pain).

The upcoming NSMB2 editor will likely be similar to Reggie! in functionality, interface, whatnot. First versions will operate on raw files (.3ds or .cia), further versions may also work on individual game files à la Reggie!. Reason is that for now, given the lack of a 3DS Riivolution-like, this will be the easiest way to test levels. (and honestly with how much of a pain it is to make a Riivo-like, it's better off as a part of a CFW, like in the NTR CFW)

It's also not based on any Reggie! fork, it's something fresh instead. Source code!

but I don't have a Gateway

Ninjhax can be used to launch CFWs or whatever that can run unsigned CIA files. Or maybe Citra can run NSMB2. Rest assured that there is a way out of this shit. Maybe it's not convenient for you, but there's a way out.

why not merge efforts with Reggie! NSMB2 or whatever it's called

I don't think Python is the right language for building this kind of project. Otherwise I'd gladly join forces. I also want to have some fun, too! We haven't been writing new level editors in ages nowadays.

.3ds? CIA? Gateway? but that's working in favor of piracy

Quite honestly, with how fucked up the 3DS scene is, I don't really care about piracy. Not like this project would have an impact on piracy or overall cause Nintendo to go bankrupt.

And even if a 3DS Riivo-like existed, you still couldn't prevent piracy. On the Wii, it's convenient because you just have to require the original disc (although you can use a modchip and a burned disc, but that's more involved than what the average pirate can afford). But on the 3DS, there's no point when you have things like Gateway or ability to install any title to the system by converting it to a CIA. Bascially, any efforts at preventing piracy are futile.

I'm not in favor of piracy, I just keep my time and energy for what makes sense.

my foot is itching

CoinKiller won't help you there, sorry.

whatever else

Just post. The thread is here to collect opinions, thoughts, whatnot, that could affect the editor's building and make it the most awesome software of 2015. We want to hear you!

Question: Will this support:
A. Opening non-NSMB2 roms
B. Decrypting non-decrypted ROMs, if you feed it the key/xorpad stuff

a) what would the point be?
b) no real point, better do the xorpad shit externally once (unless Gateway needs encrypted ROMs-- in that case maybe builtin support for zero-key encryption could be good); other than that 'real' encryption can only be done on a 3DS

Is there more info on how to get the levels running with ninjhax/ironfall/tubehax?

Or a method is being developed?

it was called Citrolution but it'd be a pain to get working and require a kernel exploit

Well, you also can open non-NSMBDS ROMs with NSMBe. This is very useful if you want to do stuff in the ROM File Browser of other NDS games. I think that's the reason Hiccup asked that.

CoinKiller doesn't have a file browser though.

I've been dragging my feet making any NSMB2 levels because I don't like how tedious testing is right now. Editing 3ds/cia files directly would help with that quite a bit.

I don't know if NSMB2 currently works with Citra (I doubt it), but I could find out. :V

I can confirm that it does not. Either that, or I downloaded a bad ROM...

Make sure you have a decrypted ROM. Citra can't run encrypted ones.

You can open your ROM in a hex editor and jump to offset 0x4C00. There should be some plaintext there; if all you see is random garbage, it's encrypted.

None of them really exist already.

Also, here's a quick tip: Look around and gather info before to ask things like that.

Edit: Alright. It's true that I should have checked again.

@nikos
There are 3DS emulators, but none of them can run NSMB2 just yet.

There is a level editor which works with NSMB2 level files (not ROMs), called Reggie! Next.

This sounds awesome! In the future, will there be a NSMBDS editor compatible with the 3DS Homebrew Channel?

Did you even read what the thread is about? Because you come in requesting something that has nothing to do with the thread.

Unless you meant a NSMB2 editor?

In that case, probably not. We don't have the kind of access needed to load a modified ROM, since such access would also allow loading ROMs in general, and thus, piracy.

So, I'll give all members who aren't already active on Kuribo64 a short progress update.

CoinKiller is now able to show almost all possible types of things in the editor:

I also worked on a tileset editor which is almost complete:

Currently I am working on the core level editor, so we can finally release something
If anyone is interested into this or has any comments/suggestions go here.

(Also: If anybody wonders, why I'm not that active here anymore, you now got an answer)
