If you leave the titlescreen alone for a bit we all know that the introduction shows up, but in it...
Not unused. (Unless I'm mistaken. If I am, sorry.) _________________________ This is a footer. |

Yeah, I always noticed that the shell looked a bit off. I even noticed it when I was six playing the game on my DS years ago.

We noticed the shell long ago. Oh, and:
"3D Koopas are NOT unused" Wrong. The shell model is a different model than the 3D koopa's model. They used this model instead of a 2D koopa shell because they couldn't use the 2D koopa shell for that, for technical reasons derp and because player'd have noticed the 2D, because every other, huh, sprite? in the intro is in 3D. Note/edit: Dumb post, don't bother to read. Better version: the shell on the title screen is a separate model (shell_green_b.nsbmd), and doesn't use the nokonoko model. |

Isn't it red sometimes? I seem to remember it being red in the 'extended' version of the intro.

Also note that Fence Koopas also use 3D models instead of sprites.

My guess is that initially everything was 3D. Later in development they found out that too many 3D objects could lag the game (goombas and Koopas are quite common in the game) and they made 2d renders of their 3d models and changed the sprites to use these. For whatever reason they didn't change the shell in the title screen, probably because it doesn't use the same code as the sprites.

Well that'd be logical.
This theory is probably the closer to the reality than any other... well, I don't know. |

Also there is only one shell, not enough to lag the game.

On the subject of the titlescreen... where are the textures for the grass and the flowers and all that?

I don't think they "found out". I think they wanted to make everything in 3D, but because of the DS limitaions, they couldn't. I guess they just wanted to try.

I think the 3D specs of the DS may have changed a bit. The graphics are bit crisper and have a better framerate in early DS videos (NSMB & SM64DS).

Look at the game! It looks all different. I guess the game were all scrapped and made from scratch, and I guess they didn't have much time add 3D Koopas/Goombas so they just put sprites. However they added a 3d Fence Koopa and the Giant goomba in world 4 is 3D too! Just saying. _________________________ Let's Play:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgH0SInZPmI Honest Quality Rippers Needed! |
