Using statistics on level 5 (given after battle), statistics for level 6, nature, and characteristic ("Proud of its power", which means the attack is highest), I can calculate IV for my Pokémon. Not that you care or anything.

The Chimchar's nature is Rash, which increases Sp. Attack at cost of Sp. Defense. I guess it will be helpful. The attack's IV ends with 5 or 0 (see characteristic). According to my pro math skills, and following formula (thanks, Bulbapedia). With bruteforce, but it's not that anyone cares. It would be also helpful to determine Hidden Power's type somehow, but I don't know if anyone in Platinum can determine it.




I have calculated the following IVs (I hope I calculated them right).

HP: 12-28 (I don't have much data right now)
Attack: 25 or 30 (thanks, characteristic - if HP or Defense is 26-28, it definitely means 30).
Defense: 12-28
Special Attack: 0 (this will be fun, don't you think)
Special Defense: 0-11
Speed: 0-11

I will need more data to calculate it more properly, but this gives the overall idea of my statistics. IVs for president.

Starly gave 1 Speed EV, and Bidoofs gave 3 HP EVs (one for each). This still doesn't change anything in terms of statistics (I need at least 4 EVs), but it's always a progress. Let's recalculate the IVs with new information, because this may be helpful, right?

I still need more data, but perhaps next level will give me more information. With Max IV being 25, it isn't really powerful, but it's not that it matters. Let's see. My Pokémon has happiness set to 82. That means the base power of Return is equal to 32. Nothing special right now, but in lategame, it could be helpful for Normal type Pokémon (Starly, perhaps?), with 102 base power (153 power with STAB bonus).

Now that I mention Starly. It's worth mentioning that on Route 201, only Bidoof and Starly can be found right now (unless this had changed in Platinum). Starly after evolution to Staraptor is perfectly fine Normal type Pokémon. As for Bidoof, it's a great HM slave (sadly, before BW, HMs are really needed), which can learn Cut, Surf, Strength, Rock Smash, Waterfall, and Rock Climb. It cannot Fly, or Defog, but it's not that even HM Slave can learn more than four moves.

As for Return, unless this had changed, it's possible to get it in Veilstone Game Corner, or it's possible to get (also once) it in Lost Tower. It's a great move, so it could be nice to learn it more than once, possibly.



Yes, even if the game uses 3D engine, and is for Nintendo DS, it doesn't mean it is fifth generation. I actually find it strange that Game Freak decided to make Pokémon Black and White for DS, but it's not that it does matter. In fourth generation, TMs sadly are one-time.



It's the player choice. Return is one of TMs worth learning. Actually, to be honest, TMs usually have great stuff, with few exceptions (Frustration, Flash, Secret Power), however, Return is one of outstanding ones.

The bar is 48 pixels long, and 30 pixels from it are filled. Assuming that Bidoof has 0 EV (well, it's wild Pokémon), any nature (natures don't affect HP), and any IV (it doesn't change anything in this case, because of low level), the Bidoof has 14HP (according to my calculations). This is 5/8 of HP bar (9HP points left), which means the chance of catching is equal to 62.4% with standard Poké Ball.



I wonder if this capture can fail (technically it can fail according to game calculations), but it's probably not allowed to fail. Bidoof needs to lose at least 69% of HP to have 100% chancce of catching it into standard Poké Ball.

This is because of math. Every single thing in Pokémon games involves complex math with complex stuff (like imaginary numbers).



The game is correct here. Sleep and freeze are best status conditions. They increase chances of capture a lot. However, sleep is preferred, because there is just no way to consistently freeze (practically any freezing move deals damage, and has only 10% of chance to freeze (20% with Serene Grace)).

It means that Chimchar has 12-22 HP IV, 25 Attack IV, 12-23 Defense IV, 0 Special Attack IV, 1-11 Special Defense IV, and 7-11 Speed IV. Not much of information, because it had just 5 levels.

Starly however had 7 levels, so I've more information. 5-6 HP IV, 29 Attack IV, 12-14 Defense IV, 3-6 Special Attack IV, 24-25 Special Defense IV, and 20-22 Speed IV. It has good IVs in stats it needs most (attack and speed), considering it's a physical sweeper judging by its base statistics (attack and speed have high base stats, everything else is average).

This could be good. In next episode, I'm going to train Bidoof somewhat, because I think this could be helpful later.
