Your new patch isn't working for me...

Agh, that's annoying. Why does Xdelta do that? I'm not sure if I can figure out how to fix that, I might run it through Xdelta one more time and try some other methods.

Posted by Arceus
- the custom track doesn't loop (that's not good, because I don't like playing a silent level)

I'm not sure how to do that. most of these tracks are direct rips from the source material using VGMTrams I export the soundbank, wave and sequence and import then using NitroStudio. For level 1-1 I actally edited the instruments in it's midi form using Aria Maestosa (as that is the only midi editor I can navigate myself around) to something I thought fit the song and the game so that way all I would have to do is import the midi and have NitroStudio use midi2sseq for me to add it in. I don't think any of the custom tracks loop, which confuses me as since I export the song directly from the source shouldn't the loop bit in the song (whatever it is called, I know what it is i just doi't know the name) export with the files too? Or is that in a separate part of the code? If so, how do I edit it and what do I edit?

- second star coin can be reached without trampoline

Really? That's any easy fix. Unless I forget I can fix that in the next build.

- the whomps can block the shooting pipe which can be very annoying

I fixed that in the new update by removing one of them because of the glitchy behaviour and blocking off the hole the shooting pipe takes you through to fix it.

Please note that:

I don't have much time left today and due to camps and school which will start soon development may begin to slow. This is on my priority list though. I will make a few more xdelta patches trying different methods and different patchers today. Hang on... If it's not in the original post it is because I am still doing it.

And yes, I do ramble on a lot. Even in real life. Sorry about all that reading!

The way I export NSMBYA NSMBe patches:

The way the .nmp patch is made is a bit of a risky one.

I would do everything in the NSMBe like usual, but once it starts actually patching it does this. Here's the log:

Note that that extra line after the "Finished!" line was very intentional as that is what it does in the actual window too.

And that's it. It just hangs there. The "Exporting patch..." window stays open. The progress bar is a few pixels off being fully filed, I can close the "Exporting patch..." window and the patch is there. I did that with Patch 4 and it was all good and I had done the same thing with Patch 5. But, idk what patch you where using, there's a problem with one of them. That's why now I'll tell you how I do the...

How I export the Xdelta patch
Right. This is the part I think is incredibly sketchy.

So I had been having a lot of trouble trying to get a actual file out of "deltapatcher_v2.0.1_win32_bin" from romhacking.net but I was having problems. So I redownloaded it and it kinda worked. Then, when I tested the file after reported problems, I couldn't get anything to work. But then I saw Arceus's post and thought that it worked fine. Clearly there is something wrong with the Xdelta patcher and I'm not 100% sure it's trustworthy. I use it normally, I don't do anything weird, I don't understand why it doesn't work the way it should! It's really annoying, but that's just not knowing most of what you are doing while ROM Hacking for you! I wish I could just upload the ROM itself, but I put time and care into these hacks and I know I would get banned or somehing for doing so.

There's no problem with that, it's better to take the time you need instead of rushing things.

And for your xDelta problem, always make sure you use a clean ROM as source which you never opened in any editor.

It’s okay everyone, I think you posted this while I was still editing and experimenting with the layout thing. I realised that it was way to bright and got a bit stressed out people might see as I rushed to fix it. Bit in that time, I feel a bit dumb for not disabling it. Sorry for that period were the bright green violated the rules!

OOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH... I was using the same ROM to patch it that I used to extract some clean files from the original game from!

But, the bad news is that I will be away for a while and won’t be back to a computer for a while. First thing when I get home will be doing that, then packing for camp

Thanks again, Arceus!

I just Updated the Layout (not the layout, I mean the post itself’s wording and format) to make the post less messy and more professional.

And lol, I just realised the 1-Castle screenshot’s time is at 420

Okay everyone!
So I have uploaded 5.1 which now the patch probably works as I got a hold of a clean unused ROM.
Download as much as you want.

Development and updates will probably be coming to a hault for the next week because of camp and being in an area with bad reception. So if you don't see any updates, that's why. Feel free to leave replies though, I am very happy to read what people think.

Your new patch isn't working for me...

Some addition to your 1-1:
- the custom track doesn't loop (that's not good, because I don't like playing a silent level)
- second star coin can be reached without trampoline
- the whomps can block the shooting pipe which can be very annoying

You need this specific ROM in order to use the patch:

File: New Super Mario Bros. (USA).nds
CRC-32: 0197576a
MD4: cf3ad14f281eeb1c375feaf55072ee9c
MD5: a2ddba012e5c3c2096d0be57cc273be5
SHA-1: a22713711b5cd58dfbafc9688dadea66c59888ce

This is the proper NSMB dump, most ROM hacks use this dump.

12:22 AM 26th January (UTC +10:00)
Happy Australia Day!
Patch 6 is out and I decided to leave 1-Castle for now, as I don't think that level is in as desperate need of a redo as some others do. Therefore, 1-4 has been redone. But while going through 1-Castle, I realized the Star Coin order was messed up and I fixed it. Glad I got something out today, let me know what you think!
11:04 AM 27th January (UTC +10:00)
New Alpha Today!
(Not a very big one)
While all I did in this new patch is change level 1-5, I'm very happy with the outcome. 1-A Is CERTAINLY next on my priority list, as that one is barely changed.
2:29 PM 27th January (UTC +10:00)
Minor update
Okay even though 7.0 came out 4 hours ago I decided to fix a small thing that had been bothering me so yeah redownload it now

Ahem... so:

First of all: Both patches didn't work. Make sure you use a clean ROM for xdelta and replace your overlay9_0 with a clean one for .nmp patches. That's how I got yours to work.

1-1: As I said in my last review I want more overview for such a big level, a zoom could do work here. So you put a zoom sprite in the level but one which zooms in, so I actually dont see anything. Level is unplayable.

1-2: Crashes immediately after Lakitu spawns. Dude, you want him to throw Spinies but you disable them in the sprite set. Level unplayable because of immediate crash. Where's btw the sense of the water that goes up one block? Also water tiles plus water sprite... argh

1-3: Well yeah, it's confusing, I had to look up in the editor where the hell I had to go. Still no fan of the floaty physics, zoom sprite could do work here too

Thanks Arceus for clarifying what you meant by those. I was confused about what you meant about Zoom sprite earlier and will fix that.

I’m not too happy with 1-3 and I think I might redo it after I redo the Castle, Tower and 1-A.

Could you please clarify what you mean by:

I get you want me to use a clean overlay9_0 but I don’t quite know if you mean in the clean rom or in my rom hack. And I am using a clean ROM, do I have to redownload a new NSMBDS rom every time I put out a new patch?

So that’s the problem! I didn’t realise, I thought that Lakitu would double as the spinies’s sprite set, I didn’t know. Might have to remove Lakitu entirely.

.nmp patches can't export changes made in the overlay files. So when you want to make an .nmp patch always replace your overlay9_0 file from your hack with one form a clean ROM. Or just make xdelta patches only.
What I do is, I have downloaded a clean ROM zip file and everytime I either want to patch or make a patch I just extract it again and again. This way you avoid downloading a clean ROM everytime.

Your patch does not work with the PROPER dump:
File: New Super Mario Bros. (USA).nds
CRC-32: 0197576a
MD4: cf3ad14f281eeb1c375feaf55072ee9c
MD5: a2ddba012e5c3c2096d0be57cc273be5
SHA-1: a22713711b5cd58dfbafc9688dadea66c59888ce

This is an on going issue that ROM hackers really need to pay attention to if they want to make a proper ROM hack.

Those are checksums. You can get programs and it will (in most cases) give you a unique piece of text that represents the file.
