Introduction:

Hello!
This is New Super Mario Bros, Yet Again! (Or NSMBYA for short)
This is a ROM Hack that redoes NSMB in my own way, redoing and changing things that were in the original game in my own way (Long story short: I made my own rom hack and you can play it)

Here's a really old trailer with old footage from the second alpha build. The Tower, Castle and 1-A in this video haven't changed as of alpha 7.1:



History, Credit and Tips:

I recommend using DeSmuME 0.9.11 and reading the .txt files included in the download (not the alternate links)

New Super Mario Bros, Yet Again! (Or NSMBYA for short) Is my first attempt at making a rom hack. There aren't any main themes or game mechanics added, I just wanted to create my own unique hack with levels or other people to enjoy.

[Another Edit] Now I'm actually done. Few! I'm gonna try figure out how to actually make a sign-off thingy at the bottom. Also, what does the Karma tab mean? I know, I'm a nub.

Karma is like a Rating of a Person, people can vote you up or down and that changes your karma. If a person has a Negative karma it is because some people voted the person down.

Ohh and you can add youtube videos directly into your post,, just use this {youtube}d34YmZtAaDc{/youtube}

Putting an example like that there is not very cool.
It's like showing off that someone is dumb infront your entire class.

Also this thread is getting offtopic. There was no post about the hack itself. Only stuff about the images and Karma.

Rule 34 No. 1: Erase the levels before you build a new one. Don't take the orignal levels and just change some things here and there. It seems like you were joking a bit in the Teaser Trailer but you know what I try to say here. I don't know if someone really wants to play the same old levels just with a few changes.

It's still in Alpha. I'm not done.
This is my first hack, I can't COMPLETELY change it. I don't know how!
Either that, or I have no idea what you mean by getting the existing levels and changing it a bit. I made those levels completely unique. I would always start by deleting every sprite and entity in the entire level but the end, the ground, the camera controller and paths, the level structure and Mario himself.

I'm sorry, I have just never done this before and if there is a simple way to fix this I would be happy to do so.

How is a level unique when I still see immediately that it's the original one just a bit changed?
Open up a level, press CTRL + A and then on the small red cross in the upper taskbar. Then build your level from scratch and show us that you are able to create really unique levels.

sounds like a cool way to create a level. change the background and tileset, redo the tiles, then move the sprites around.

I've done that with the redone levels 1-1 and 1-2. Am I doing anything wrong or are they good? Thanks

That's odd. You are playing the wrong build of the game. The one you are playing was the first build I ever built. If you check the screenshots, they are in the order of the levels. Thanks so much for putting your spare time into a review though! It means a lot to me to know there is someone out there who is willing to invest their time into helping me grow as a ROM Hacker. I still haven't fixed the timer thing as I only saw this as I am uploading the 4th build of the game. I'm just going to double check that the Mega link works and that when patching the game it plays the right build.

Edit: If anyone would like, I can email your the actual ROM itself.

Second Edit: I can't get the patch to work either, but I can't even get the alpha version. Maybe it's a problem with Xdelta not actually creating the file, or NSMBe changing 39 files other than 60 or so, but I can't get it to work. Are other people having this problem?

So, I downloaded your hack and I have to state the following (btw the patch worked perfectly fine):
After playing 1-1, 1-2 and the start of 1-3 I can tell that my first impression is umm... confused.

Music: You are trying to implement custom music, I won't judge it here, everyone has to find out for himself if he likes it or not but what I find annoying is that the soundsets are not working. In 1-1 there are no castle enemy sounds, in 1-2 no sounds at all. You have to fix that, even if you maybe have to do it without custom music.

Graphics: The Mario recolor just is completely out of place and I don't even see a sense in that than "main thing I have a recolor." Also I think that the graphics combination in 1-1 with sunlight lighting isn't really fitting as well.

Level Design: Yeah, my main critism (as always). You decided to do custom levels, thumbs up for that but what I feel after playing these three levels is... emptyness. The levels feel like a bunch of randomly generated obstacles, followed by huge emptyness. In 1-1 a Zoom sprite (84) wouldn't hurt for a better overview, also you could set a top offset for the view because the main time I go up. The twist at the end was actually quite nice haha. But why the hell is the flagpole out of the view...?
In 1-2 I feel like this level was made in 5 minutes, because it's short, empty and uninspired. What I liked in 1-1, that you do this whole confusing course, just to find out that the flagpole is at the start, something like this or any other inspiration is lacking here. Also the cheep-cheep spam section is lagging.
Yeah, 1-3... floaty physics... for no actual reason.

What I want to say in general is, that your levels are missing a theme. Look at other content creators or, even better, at the original levels and you will see that every level follows a certain theme like a special enemy, a specific platform, etc. Try to get an idea and build the level around it. At the moment it feels like you just put a bunch of sprites on some tiles and that's it.

That sums it up I guess. Please remember that I don't say this to flame you or something like that but to tell you what you could improve. If you have any questions you can always ask me.

The reason the flagpole is out of view was that I was having some trouble with the View. I tried to make it big enough to fit the whole end castle (Or whatever you call it) but when I would play test it instead of going into the level mario would just die and the only thing you would be able to see is Orange. For some reason, I have opened the project today and made the view bigger and now it is working fine, so I will fix that. Thank you for writting all of this, I am working on making the changed to fix the problems you have with my Hack in it's current state right now. Thanks!

Edit: I am having one problem though. Whenever I would open my ROM in DeSmuMe 0.9.11, I get this warning:

The ROM header is invalid.
The device size has been increased to allow for the provided file size.

Should I worry about this? What do I do? What does this mean?

Another Edit:

I'm sorry I always edit my posts like ten times before I get what I want to get across, but new things come to my mind only after I've already posted something before it.

So I have no clue what the Zoom thing is, I have added it to level 1-1 and set the Zone heights and widths and lefts and so on to 4 as I think what this means is how far away Mario can be from the center of the camera, plus I think 4 looks the best that way.

Your new patch isn't working for me...

Some addition to your 1-1:
- the custom track doesn't loop (that's not good, because I don't like playing a silent level)
- second star coin can be reached without trampoline
- the whomps can block the shooting pipe which can be very annoying
