Hey guys.

I wouldn't normally ask something like this but I'm honestly dreading having to do this. So, rather than gritting my teeth and doing it myself I'm offering the job to someone else in exchange for credit.

What I'm looking for someone to do is to 'randomly' tile colored blocks in this fashion:

If you choose to volunteer yourself for the task, I give you fair warning- this is a big work load that would take several hours to do in a single go.

The area that needs tiling- as well as the tileset I'm using, will be provided.

I'd help but.... doing randomization by hand makes me feel kinda uncomfortable constantly, like it's not random enough, too much blue here, too much red here, this yellow cluster is too bunched up, etc.

I may do it but you'd have to wait until I come back home

How many levels & tilesets?

Or well, not 'levels' per se, but areas?

if it's only the colored ones, then sure, I guess I don't mind.

We could talk on the IRC for more details.

I could randomise tiles for hours while doing other stuff, so why not.

Ask whoever you feel most fit for the task.

I just need one view of one area to have the tiles randomized, but it's a big view. (3480x1680)

Thierry, if you're up to the task I'll happily hand it to you.

I'm picturing this view as a hugeass view, which is fine by me.

Counting in blocks, I suppose? Alright. Long as it may be, it's not necessarily very tedious if you know how to do it right.

I could make a program for this pretty easily.

Make it fit the area borders, be perfectly randomised just like a person can make it, and make sure no tile is cut.

Now that would be interesting to see. But in all honesty I doubt someone will ever bother making such a tool.

It can fill arbitrarily-shaped areas, and export for either NSMB or NSMBW.

Nice. I'm not used to see someone actually make a tool they said they would.

I'm taking it's compatible with any tileset if you set it up right?

It will work with any version of the bonus-room tileset if you specify the object numbers. It would take some more work to make it compatible with entirely different tilesets; for example, the NSMBW/2/U tower tilesets, where objects along edges are different from ones in the middle. (NSMBU's is actually quite a bit more complex than NSMBW's.)

It's somewhat hardcoded for specific filenames and such, and should be optimized for speed, but here's what it looks like right now.

Soo yea.  MarioFanatic64, will you be using this? I'd like to know, since if you are will have to quit, my job not being of use anymore.

I'll have to see for myself how it works before I can make a decision on whether or not to use it.

But thank you both, Thierry and  RoadrunnerWMC for being such a help.

An update on the situation:

RoadrunnerWMC has kindly ran the level file through his program and I now have the completely tile-randomized area. Many thanks to both  RoadrunnerWMC and Thierry for helping me through this, and I hope I haven't been too much of a pain in the arse.
