For some reason the editor doesn't let me edit textures manually. You have to import a PNG and lose a lot of quality.

I would rather import a PNG to get a pallete (or create a pallete some other way) and use that to create the image pixel by pixel.

The reason the texture loses quality when imported is because the texture is stored in a compressed format. There is no way around this afaik so the images will always have to go through some compression.

So no way to edit it directly, even with low colours?

I think the problem Hiccup mentions is, that even 16-color textures in a 256 color palette lose quality even though it is possible to import them without lose of quality. To be honest, I often use MKDS Course Modifier for importing textures because it does the job way better.

How can you import them without loss of quality? By using MKDSCM?

I am sure there is a problem with NSMBe, because only textures that are imported with it seem to have the quality loss. Right now just use different Editors to import textures. I and  ray personally use MKDSCM; it works fine with that one.
