Alright, so today I decided to start over playing Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time, but with a twist. I wasn't a fan of the music that was in it, so I swapped music from Bowser's Inside Story to give it a twist.

Upon the start of the game, where you fight Bowser Jr., The game freezes as the battle starts. It should be playing the Okey Dokey! theme from Bowser's Inside Story. Not only that, it freezes in the No$GBA Emulator too.

I imported the music with the DS Sound Studio and tested it. The Music track plays fine in the Sound Studio, but whenever the battle starts, it freezes.

Is there any fix? I also tried disabling the Dynamic Recompiler, No luck.

when encountering a problem where you don't know the cause, start small. that way you can tell where the issue lies.

in DS Sound Studio, export the very song you want replaced, then reimport it back. the song should be the same, only difference being that you put it there. if it still crashes, then we know it's going to crash no matter what track you insert.

It works fine with the original music. But after importing BIS's music, freeze. It's something to do with the music I imported.

try importing some other tracks from BIS, one at a time. and try inserting it into different slots while you're at it.

if there's an issue with a specific track, one thing we can do is check if reconverting it from SSEQ to MIDI and vice-versa would fix the issue.
if not, then we start removing events and channels from it till it works.

My first guess would be that the song tries to play more than 16 notes at once, But that wouldn't lead to the game crashing. As far as I know, this would play (the sound of) silence.

That shouldn't be the case though because Bowser's Inside Story plays it. If you look closely at the .sdat tracks from BIS, you'll notice it's the same .sdat tracks from Partner's in time, just some more tracks added since BIS has more music.

I imported the "Panic Theme?" from Bowser's Inside Story over the one in partners in time and it plays fine in the first scene where Bowser Jr appears. Dunno if the boss track works because I havn't gotten that far.

I just replaced that track back to the original and played through the battle. I got to the part where Mario has to fight that green shroob monster, and it freezes again there. This battle uses the boss theme, which I also replaced with the one from BIS.

Strange that it would straight up crashing it. Typically if a song doesn't work it crashes the sound driver only. My guess is that the game doesn't handle bigger SDATs that well.
