Hello everyone,

Due to the fact that the Music and Sound Hacking guide on this site is pretty old, kind of outdated, misses some newer information and is kind of complicated and hard to understand, I plan to write a New and easier-to-understand guide (if thats ok for everyone).

For doing this I need some background information.
To be exactly: i couldn't find informations about what exactly those .swar and .swav files are.

Thanks for reading

.swar is a SoundWaveArchive, it holds all the .swavs, which are basically DS WAVs

I actually planned to make one for a while now, at least from SSEQ insertion to instrumental replacement. I might actually do it, there's a unexpected rise in interest lately.

a few other experienced peeps had the same idea, by the way.

Over on the MvL Discord i wrote a little guide for inserting music into NSMBDS.
Thought I could post it over here. But then I realzied that a new music guide would also be helpful.
Wanna make it in the next few days (if that is ok for you)

Also thank you all for the replies

You can use swav2swar if you have many SWAV files. swav2swar packs SWAV files into a SWAR, and to extract SWAVs from a SWAR, you can use Kiwi DS.

I really doubt Nitro Studio doesn't support that. Are you sure you have the latest build?

The main problem with Orengefox's tutorial — the most extended one that most people use — is that it's outdated. And yea, some stuff could've been explained more "starter-friendly" I suppose.

Btw, did you guys notice Orengefox has been removing his tutorial on all forums he uploaded it? It's pretty strange, I mean, it has been so long since he was active in the DS (Music) Hacking scene, and now he decides not to share his old work anymore.

Nitro Studio doesn't support SWARs. Yes, it does, and has for a while now. Edit a SWAR or SBNK by double clicking on it. Maybe I should have made that more clear at some point, but oh well. Anyways, here is some info about each file:

SWAR

These are known as Sound Wave Archives. Think of them as like a folder of SWAV files. There really isn't much else to say about them. Banks can hook up to multiple of these and use their SWAVS for audio.

SWAV

The DS's version of a wave file. These are generally used for instrument samples, SFX, voice clips, and other things. They can be PCM8, PCM16, or ADPCM encoded, but that's not really important.

SSEQ uses SBNK for instruments, SBNK uses SWAR for instrument sounds.
