So uh...interesting problem.... I edited the image files that belong to the tileset and bushes of the titlescreen.
I used this image:  It was the right size and the ground was in the correct place. I deleted the bushes and the fence and made the background transparent. Well, after replacing both files with this image, the titlescreen now looks like this:  The background is completely white, and the flowers are still there, fully animated. What is going on here? Use a png with transparency, it's clearly not in the example.
