Hello. I am a new user on the forum (and to NSMB hacking in general) and I am working with my friend Schmeee to create a NSMB rom hack, that will hopefully include a good amount of new things. However, I do have some questions to ask. They may sound noobish, but like I said, I am very new at NSMB hacking. So keep that in mind when you answer.

-Is it possible to add new characters (models, animations, attributes, etc.)?
-Can you add another world to be unlocked after you fulfill a certain requirement? (e.g. beat the final boss in a short amount of time)
-Can you create custom boss battles?
-Where can I find good tilesets and how do I add them without replacing others?
-How do paths for the minimap work? (I am so confused)


That's all I have now, but any general advice and help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

First of all, ask questions in this thread.

Second of all, here is what I know:

1. I don't know how to add new characters, since it would require a lot of ASM, but you can replace characters,
which I've seen in one hack.

2. You cannot add another world. Period. You also cannot add new areas. You are limited to the predefined amount.
You may be able to change the requirements for reaching Worlds 4 and 7, though.

3. You can make custom bosses, like what Skawo did with the final boss in Newer DS, but apparently the code for the
bosses and just about everything else is really messed up, so it probably isn't worth your time.

4. You can find tileset files all around NSMBHD. .nmt files are easily imported into NSMBe on top of another one,
but .png ones require some... things that I have no idea how to do yet.

5. I don't know.

Basically you can find most answers by using the Search function but a general answer to your questions: All of these things can't be done right after jumping into NSMB hacking and require a huge knowledge about it. Things like custom bosses for example haven't be done by anyone besides of the Newer Team yet.
So don't expect to go right into the editor and find the custom boss button.

Thanks for the answers. Let's say I wanted to replace Mario with Luigi (or at least make it so you always play as him) and then Luigi with some other character. How would I go about doing that?

Also, about the tilesets. Is there a way to import them without overwriting existing ones? If not, which tilesets are unused or useless (just so I can figure out what to replace)

What would you recommend that I start with? (other than levels)

For custom worldmaps, download RicBent's Goombatlas, and then use the NSMBe Mod and ASM Hack Template to import it into the game.

I think that is too complicated for you, whose title is "the very untalented hacker".
