I edited a MvL level and i wanna try if it works but i tried opening 2 instances of DeSmuMe, both on NSMB (same ROM), and went into the multiplayer menus but it never seems to connect

Local multiplayer hasn't been looked into enough to actually work properly.

Actually, I read somewhere that there was a version of desmume that supported it, but it got taken down by Nintendo. You can look into it if you want, but it'd probably be easier to just use a flashcart.

Yeah, it's not gonna happen. You'll need to test MvsL on a real DS.

Unfortunately my R4i 3DS has... umm stopped working? or maybe it's just that the firmware is very outdated
And plus, the last time i tried multiplayer on the R4i, it started desyncing almost immediately...

EDIT: Yep. My flashcart is broken. A screen just pops up saying that an error has occurred. RIP.

Try reformating the SD card and putting the proper files on it. Obviously do a backup of its current state first.

I have an R4i 3DS, and I also get an error message, but I turn my DS's internal clock back a few years and it's fixed.

No it just says "An error has occurred. Read the 3DS manual for more information. Hold the POWER button to turn off the console."
Note the "3DS manual" part. Which means this error is thrown by the 3DS, not by the cart. The R4i doesn't even start up at all

I don't think so.

Maybe your flashcart is just old, and Nintendo blocked it with an update. :^

I also had the same problem on DSi.

Did you update the 3DS to the latest version? If so, you'll need to downgrade TWL_FIRM (or install a custom firmware - but that is a big pain). Downgrading TWL_FIRM can be done on any version with the homebrew "FBI", and is harmless if you follow the instructions. Read, understand and follow every element of this post (except the bit where it suggests you use something other than FBI):
http://www.3dsiso.com/3ds-tips-and-tutorials/266619-proper-ds-cart-enable-rf-complete-flash-card-time-warp.html
If the latest version of FBI doesn't work, go back version by version (off the github releases page) till you find one that does.
it is much easier than it sounds. ask me (or google it) if you don't understand anything

also, if you haven't already - try the clock thing

Ugh...
If it was the firmware, then AT LEAST the cart would've started up and thrown a firmware error (i know because it happened to me a long time ago), but no, the cart doesn't start up, i just get the 3DS error as if i took out the cartridge before it fully loaded

This is the same thing that happened to me. Your cart is likely blocked on the latest 3DS firware. Also, thanks hiccup, didn't know that was a thing, will try it

No. I'm talking about one of the 3DS's firmwares. The 3DS blocks the flashcart from loading, by displaying that screen instead of loading the flashcart.

bullshit.

the closest thing would be Nintendo blocking desmume from WFC and that was quite a while ago.

anyway yeah, you'll need two DS's. desmume can't get far enough with local multiplayer. closest I ever got (I was the one working on it) was Luigi seeing Mario and trying to connect, but they fail to do so.

this kind of shit didn't help, either.

There is/was a working unofficial build(s) of desmume that had online multiplayer, but never any with local multiplayer.

Yep, that's what I was thinking of.

Edit: Didn't read hiccup's post. I was more likely thinking of this.

anyway, to summarize things and clear up misunderstandings:

* desmume never supported local multiplayer enough to play a game. (or some nerd got it working without me knowing)
* desmume supports online wifi via an emulated access point. it works in homebrew.
* desmume supported WFC with imperfect stability. Nintendo blocked it from their servers.
* desmume then intentionally blocked WFC because zeromus freaked out.
* there have never been any legal action against desmume, be it from Nintendo or anyone else. desmume is well within the law.
