Before this misleads anyone, this is just a heavy enough modification of the Mario vs Luigi mode rather than an actual co-op hack.

Multiplayer hack of New Super Mario Bros.
Also, excuse the very unoriginal name, it's only a placeholder.

Correct me if I'm wrong but there are no co-op hacks on this board so this hack may be a nice change for those looking for something different. This hack changes the versus mode into a cooperative mode. The objective is to reach the pipe at the end of each level. There are no world maps, saving or any of the single player features, it is simply a hack to play a few levels together. The levels aren't exactly complex but I do plan on updating the hack over time with some more features/improvements. Although rare, the games can de-sync but most of the time it works fine.

Screenshots:

Features:

- 3D Goombas.
- 4 new multiplayer levels.
- No battle stars.
- Some new tilesets.
- A new rocky/grassy background.
- Bowser Jr boss battle.
- Coins have no function.
- Changed music (still limited due to the Mario vs Luigi mode only loading 2 songs).
- Only "Co-op" mode can be selected at the menu. (Thanks to  skawo)

How to Play:

- Download the following xdelta patch here and apply it to a CLEAN US ROM.
- Connect both DS's to each other (DLP will not work).
- Select the following options (Grassland stage NEEDS to be selected or the game will not function properly).

Known Issues:

- Sometimes at the start of the Bowser Jr fight, Mario can become stuck and unable to move. I don't know what exactly causes this but if Mario moves before Luigi does, this bug is usually avoided.
- If one player is entering a pipe while another player loses their last life, the game may hang.
- Spikeballs can occasionally cause a small amount of desyncing (Needs to be tested further).
- Some missing sound effects.
- Possibly other issues.

Special Thanks:

-  Dirbaio (Use of his no sprite limitation ASM hack, which can be found here).
-  skawo (Answering many of my questions & some ASM hacking).

This hack looks interesting in my opinion, and your first post is clarifying.

This looks very interesting. I'll be able to play it when (or if) I find my DSlite and old AK2i.

Did you discover any unused multiplayer behaviours? Like sprites that have special behaviours for two players?

Not that I can remember.

Bowser Jr does seem to attack Luigi too. The sprites in this hack seem to function normally. If you want me to test any sprites, feel free to PM me.

Update - 1

- Only "Co-op" mode can be selected at the menu now (Thanks to  skawo).
- The Grassland level is now twice as big for longer gameplay.

I played this hack a few days ago with a friend, and it's really nice to finally have (a sort of) Co-op play hack.

The only thing we disliked a bit was that you haven't made much use of the 'sprite limitation ASM hack'. All levels (except the Castle level) contain almost only Goombas. You should use more different enemies.

Also, it wasn't possible to really 'end' or 'win' this game. After the Bowser Jr fight, you return to the Level choosing screen and neither Mario or Luigi has won a round.

Yeah I will admit, I was a bit lazy and used many Goombas. I will eventually make some improvements and change around the enemies. However, even with the sprite limitation gone, having multiple sprites can actually cause a fair amount of lag when playing which is why some of the levels seem a bit bland. The hack is more about playing with 2 players rather than how good the actual levels are. I will make some improvements to both the enemies and the levels. Eventually.

I haven't really found a solution to this. It's something that is coded into the game so I have no idea how I would even go about changing this. The flag also has the exact same ending (returning to level screen and no wins).
I guess maybe if the game returned the players to the Main Menu after they won that would be a better "ending"?
I'll look into it.

Thanks for the feedback!

Never mind, thought he was saying that he hasn't seen anyone who has made a custom level in MvL mode.

Let's play "Co-Op" Bros.

There was some time I already had the interest to test this hack.
The problem is that I don't have two Nintendo DSs to do it. So finally I found a friend here and we decided to make a video and see what happens.

Actually, this hack works. And works very well. Yeah, the level design is on a simple structure, but it's not matter, because the hack works! And that is what matters at the moment. The levels are large enough and players can play on separate screens and at different times, without one necessarily need to stay next to each other.

It will be very interesting if the community could see if this hack evolve to be accessed like normal levels. Imagine if we can also play the game campaign with two players simultaneously. But I think right now I'm wondering too much. Anyway, this hack deserves my right side thumb up!

Let's Play Shadey21 "Co-Op"Bros
(Sorry bad, bad quality, it was shot with cellphone.)

Youtube video (lenght 2:25)

My final perspective:
Type: Special Versus Mode
Graphics: 3/5
Difficulty: 3/5
Entertainment: 3/5
Quality: 3/5
Sound: 3/5
Gameplay: 4/5
Final Media: 3/5
