I'll apologize from the get go, as this is probably something that's been discussed before, but I couldn't find much on it...

How would one go about using the duplicate tileset/background slots? I've seen someone say it requires one to switch the files they use to some other files in the ROM, but I haven't seen an explanation of how one would do that.

I've also seen someone say that version 5.1 of the editor could do just that automatically, but it's disappeared off the face of the interwebz.

Thanks for the help.

I haven't tried it myself, but I have a theory about how the duplicates can be used.

If a .png is imported into a background, all duplicate backgrounds will receive the same set of tiles. In some cases, the tile placement of the duplicates isn't affected but the new tiles from the imported background make it look corrupted.

These duplicates should be editable to produce a different background, and it shouldn't affect the background you imported. But I'm just guessing here.

If you have an alternate palette version of a background you can try importing the second palette with the same background using this method and then with the duplicate slot, change the palette to produce two different backgrounds.

I'm lazy so this is untested.

Well, nope, that doesn't seem to have anything like that...

Incidentally, this is the topic that mentions this: http://nsmbhd.net/thread/1500-how-do-you-import-backgrounds-into-empty-slots/
