You must remove stuff so it use less tiles.

Try separating this bg in two ones, a top one and a bottom one.

Also, that BG won't loop correctly, it'll just cut off the ends and it'll look like a mess.

If you want a decent BG you have to put it together yourself. It needs to be re-sized so it uses a minimal amount of 8x8 tiles, and it connects up at the ends. If you want details, you'll need a two layer BG, with the close-up stuff in the top BG (you'll need to use transparency so you can see Bottom BG behind it), and the Bottom BG with the far away stuff and the sky.

Doesn't actually do anything.

Each background can only use 256 8x8 tiles. This is exactly enough for a tiled 128x128 background. Of course, 128 pixels wide is very small for a background, but you can minimize that using flipping.

It's 320 tiles.

And the PNG importer doesn't know how to take advantage of tile flipping (nor multiple palettes).

Yes, the importer sucks.

You can edit the background with gimp or something to make two backgrounds instead of one (TOP and BOTTOM). Then you theoretically can use 512 8x8 tiles.

I recommended make it from scratch.

The main problem when importing BGs you should concern:

1. NSMB supports 8px*8px tiles as the smallest dot in BG.
2. As you can see, each BG have limited amount of those 8x8 tiles to use.
3. Beware of the edge. You should know that BG does looping in actual gameplay.

That's why it is exhausted to do some nice BG. You need a lotta efforts.
