Hello, fellow users of NSMBHD.
Many of you are making a hack, so I just want to share with you...
DA TOP 5 TIPZ ON HOW TO MAKE AN AWEZOME HACK
1. Level Design
First things first, delete everything in the level (Apart from the entrances and the views), now everything that you make will be %100 yours. Make a fun level, not a boring one. Below are some things a fun and a boring level have:
BORING
Plain Level Design
No Obstacles
Not many sprites
Super easy
The feeling that makes players think "Has a 4 yearold designed this level?"
FUN
Obstacles
Lots of sprites
Make the difficulty based on what world the level is in.
Amazing Level Design (Almost everything is different)
The feeling that makes players think "Omg... I bet an NSMB hacking pro has designed this level!"
2. Custom Tilesets/Backgrounds
Sure, the classic tilesets are nice, but when you add new ones, they really spice your hack up! This is one of the most important things to do, so I recommend doing it. Its best to design the tilesets/backgrounds yourself, and not steal anything from the Uploader. But, im not saying using tilesets/backgrounds from the Uploader is bad, its just more original to make them yourself. Many people use Wii tilesets and backgrounds, because the look "Pretty". I kind of agree with them, but sometimes they can make your hack look really ugly. I think you get the point here, so onto the next tip!
3. Changing the logo
This is a must-do, change the logo to the name of your hack. It makes your menu look seriously epic. But, people mess up with this because if there hack has a very long name, they can't fit all the letters on the logo. So, give your hack a short name. So if my hacks name were: Awesome Super Mario Bros = The Adventure Continues, I would just put: Awesome Super Mario Bros. Dont add the extra bit.
4. Custom Overworld
You dont really need this, but it makes your hack look awesome. Changing the worlds and what they look like is just plain amazing. It will attract more people to come play your hack. Im not going to post a tutorial on how to do this, because im sure there is one on the forums somewhere! Another good idea is to change world's subjects. So, the first world is just your average grassland right? Well, you could change that to an Autumn Grassland!
5. ASM Hacking
This is the top tip to make your hack one of the best hacks ever: ASM Hacking. There are plenty of tutorials on the site on how to do this, so im not gona put one here. ASM Hacking is one of the best ways to fully edit your game and change what you desire. That way, you can start tranforming your hack into your DREAM HACK! There are many things you can do with ASM hacking, including changing your own hack's music!

I fail to see to some degree the no obstacle and little sprite its boring.

An advanced level maker can make a good level regardless if it has no obstacle (which the level will be some sort of puzzle like), or if its an easygoing level (usually from the first world)


Now when you mention the 'lots of sprites' thing, IMO its somepart wrong, because many sprites could include many enemies sprites which would either make the area too difficult and cheap


But otherwise, the tips seems nice.

Geez. My hack has no new tilesets.
I actually don't care how it looks. I want the fun from my game.
My game is based on Fun and not 'OMGZ THIS LOOKS LIEK THE BEST EVA'
ASM hacking is very hard.
Logo is harder than designing the levels so i would personally ask someone for help,
Other than that.

Smth. is funny Haydn. Your first point "delete everything in a level" In the tower level you´ve build there could the old tower structures be seen.

Ummm... No.

A hack isn't necessarily better for having custom tilesets or BGs or overworld or ASM hacks.
It's all about making a game. If having custom stuff adds gameplay value, it's OK. But I've seen many terrible tilesets and BGs that are ugly, unintuitive, have bad tile behaviors, etc etc.

So don't go and make tilesets, custom overworlds or ASM hacks because they'll make your hack cooler.
If your tilesets suck, it definitely won't.

Oh, and I know that MF64 will hate me for this buuuuut...

NO REMAKE LEVELS, if there is a twist on it, or the whole hack is a remake its fine, if not then... IF THE PLAYER WANTS CLASSIC LEVELS, THEY SHOULD PLAY CLASSIC GAMES.

Well, sometimes playing it with updated graphics feels like a whole different experience

Also NSMB mechanics.

On topic: I agree. Though I did use remade levels very minimally in Clone Tag Team (W7 Exclusively)

Well, a remake worlds not that bad I guess. And something that often bugs me is people making retro worlds, witch I love the idea of, but its always just remak levels.
