Which do you prefer? Most people prefer SMG who have played both series, but the NSMB series has sold more copies.

Depend on the gameplay style actually: 2D or 3D.
NSMB is 2D, but SMG is 3D. (I like both) _________________________

The NSMB series has sold more copies because of its target audience. Nostalgic adults who buy them to re-enjoy the 2D platforming, and kids who'll whine to their parents until they fold like a piece of paper. Equals double the moneys. Galaxy 1 and 2 are amazingly inventive, much more interactive, the level design is top-notch and unflawed, and at the risk of sounding like a graphics mook, the visuals are awe-inspiring. It's made with a lot more TLC, and it's pretty clear when you compare it to the generic-ness of the NSMB games. Also, 3D Mario games just plain beat 2D Mario games. That's a scientifically tested and approved by Stephen Hawking as a fact. New Super Mario Bros.: Clone Tag Team 1+2 / New Super Mario Advance + Take 2 / Super Mario: Endless Earth My two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart. |

I also agree. NSMB catches the casual crowd/nostalgia junkies well, while the SMG series suits most normal gamers. Its a shame, because the SMG games are superior in almost every way.

I like both. A lot. They're both excellent games. (Except some. *ahem*NSMB2*ahem*)
They're just different. Neither is superior. I mean, it's an entirely different gameplay style. How can you compare them? |

Graphics: I have studied both, and found SMG superior. NSMB series does suffer from some bland backgrounds and occasionally blocky characters, while SMG is smooth and has AMAZING backgrounds.
Sound: NSMB series has mostly the same music, and it is all done on the computer, while the SMG series has orchestral and sometimes synthesized music. SMG2 barely recycled anything, while NSMB2 and NSBBU used almost entirely recycled music. Replay Value: SMG/SMG2 had secondary quests (Luigi/Green Stars) while the NSMB series had just star coins hidden in the levels. SMG wins this bigtime. Multiplayer: The ONLY area I think the NSMB series wins out. |

Yup, you're quite right with the recycling stuff. I'm playing NSMBU these days and it feels exactly the same as NSMBW
And NSMB2 was even worse Anyway, if you compare them both when they were both new series (NSMBDS/NSMBW and SMG1/2), they're both very awesome games, both very innovative and awesome. I loved it when I played NSMBDS and NSMBW or the first time. They felt new, exciting, awesome . SMG1/2 too, probably SMG1 more than SMG2. And NSMB music is epic too. Just different style. But yea it has gotten bland because they've been reusing it in every game |

And another thing is, most reviews/reviewers failed to mention the recycled music in NSMB2 and NSMBU. People fail to understand that music is one of the most critical parts of any game.

NSMB2 was very terrible in terms of recycling...
NSMBU is a bit better |

I of course like the SMG series more. But that might be because I played SMG2 and SMG1 before I'd played NSMB. I was like, 'how the fuck do you long jump/backflip?!' the firs time I played NSMBW. The SMG series had so many awesome powerups, where the only powerup I really liked in NSMBDS was the Blue Shell. I don't know why they didn't bring it back for any other games... _________________________ "A long dispute means that both parties are wrong" - The Amphilogiai |

Well, to be honest, a lot of people hate the blue shell. It was fun, but the levels didn't really require it (with a few exceptions). If they made it more prominent, it would have been a great powerup.

It's really underused. And I don't think it's a great powerup. It's annoying as fuck, hard to control, easy to kill yourself. It provides no gameplay value
And the ice flower... It's overused, on the other hand |

Terribly. I also think it is hard to use, compared to the fire flower, which has been the ideal Mario powerup for years now

I'm personally a big fan of the blue shell... In MvsL, I'd just slide through the whole level and try to defeat my opponent without stopping, eheh ?)

Being honest, I havent really played more than SMG1, but I find the NSMB series to be much more fun; I have a great time with my sister playing co-op (and sometimes killing each other) and it has a LOT of levels and fun gimmicks that keep the game fresh all the time. So, my vote goes for NSMB.

I also voted NSMB. Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel (don't really think you can call it a series) are excellent games, but I prefer playing 2-dimensional levels.
