Hi guys, I saw a video on youtube of NSMB DS E3 2005 and have co-op mode in E3.
Can a person get the beta rom and transfer some data from the co-op mode to normal?

It depends which version.

With a very old prototype various things could be different and incompatible.

If you have a beta I'll give it a try

To be plain and simple about this:

This is impossible.
Completely.

Edit: Well actually it's not.
It could be accomplished with A LOT of ASM hacking. But I doubt anyone would be willing to actually do it.
Even if that was done, it'd probably still be extremely buggy.

IIRC Tanks said he managed to put singleplayer 1-1 into a multiplayer level, back then in 2008. It works, but you're limited by the sprites available in multiplayer.

For co-op to work, one would need to make the flagpole sprite work in multiplayer, and check that it works as intended (its code probably only supports singleplayer). That would be the hardest part imo. Then, another thing to do would be make sure that fireballs shot by one player go through the other player. With that done, you would get pretty convincing co-op.

Edit- another thing to take into account is that you'll need two DSes and two flashcarts to test your hacks, which isn't quite convenient. It has already been established that the ROMs have to be the same on the two sides, and download play isn't a possibility because asfadsfasfd signing. And no emulator afaik is able to emulate a working local wifi connection.

I think the Flagpole is programmed for Multiplayer. The code is just unused.
There was a co-op in the beta version, wasn't it? Why should they delete the code?

About your last sentence... Do you really think download play (even if we could mess with it) would be a possibility for something as large as that?
I highly doubt it.

Freeze: I don't think the flagpole works well with multiplayer, given that it fails epicly with the Mario clone thing. Also the beta videos never show the flagpole, so they probably never implemented it.

Nadia: You're right. If coop was possible it wouldn't be possible with Download Play. Everything that's downloaded with DLP needs to fit completely in the DS's RAM which is just 4MB. And there has to be also free space in RAM for the game itself to run. So nope.

Unless everytime a level is played, the needed data for that level only is downloaded. MKDS does that. And it's pretty annoying, at every course you're stuck at "LOADING..." for some time

would be cool though. Having 100 coins give a life and actually adding time to Multiplayer would be pretty hard to do. if only a beta rom was leaked online i say that would make things easier

Nah, a leaked beta rom wouldn't make things easier at all
It's just ASM code. ASM code can't be copied from one rom to another that easily. So a beta rom would be useless.

but if it had basic working multiplayer could a hacker just not start coding from there?

Yea but it'd still be ... a beta rom.
It won't have all the features the final game has, and we'd have to adapt NSMB Editor to work with it over again. Not cool

Stop dramin. There is no beta Rom, there won't be a beta rom and we won't have multiplayer. Just wait for NSMb2 hacking. There IS multiplayer

The 3DS seems to have a strong security layer, so perhaps homebrew/romhacks will only run with complex hardware hacks or on emulators. Or perhaps not run at all. Making an emulator would still require cracking ROM encryption to be able to analyze the games' code. And on the other hand, if Crown3DS gets real, piracy will run rampant. Lame, Nintendo.

And I bet the WiiU will have an equally strong security layer. The times of Letterbomb and other easy software exploits is gone. And that might be the end of ROM hacking as well.

So for now we should enjoy hacking NSMB while it lasts.
