The production of the hack was started in 2012, when the developer had gained some motivation and experience in New Super Mario Bros. hacking. At first the hack was completely random and didn't have a specific theme. Later on, the developer came up with the idea of a night theme. As almost all original Mario Bros. games and other notable New Super Mario Bros. hacks took place during daytime. The idea was remarkable, and the developer decided to make the hack his first New Super Mario Bros. hacking project.

In October 2012, the developer officially announced his first hack on a thread on the New Super Mario Bros. Hacking Domain. entitled Mario Bros. Super Star. The name was derived from the popular SNES Kirby game "Kirby Super Star".

The hack was updated regularly from October 2012 to early 2013. In January 2013, the developer left the board unexpectedly. During that time he was still working with World 2.

Later on, in March 2013, the developer had stated via his thread that he enjoyed playing Minecraft game on his PC much more than hacking New Super Mario Bros. and left the board. This statement created many doubts and people thought that his hack would be abandoned and canceled like many other hacks before, which all happened due to loss in interest of continuing the project.

The developer became inactive in the forums afterward, despite having been an active user for more than a year. He started posting on the forums occasionally starting March 2013.

While he was inactive on the forums, the New Super Mario Bros. Hacking Domain reached their second anniversary. There was a big clean up in the NSMB Hacks. Most canceled or abandoned threads were deleted or trashed. Fortunately, Mario Bros. Super Star's thread had been kept open by the moderators.

In late 2013, the developer became more active on the board, he posted New Super Mario Bros. hacking related questions and such.

In January 2014, the developer  MarioSunshine has officially returned to the board. But he hasn't stated yet that he will continue the hack he has created or not. Mario Bros. Super Star remained inactive.

In May 2014, the developer finally came back to continue his hack.

While several demos of Mario Bros. Super Star were released, it is impossible to play any of the ones newer than the Beta 2. This is because  MarioSunshine took down the link for the latest demo. While he was planning on releasing the next demo soon after, he never did and he disappeared from the board.
