So, for my ROM hack I might use NewerDS as a baserom. Because rotation controllers. Is there anything I should pay extra attention to when hacking Newer (with the NewerDS editor, which I haven't used yet) instead of vanilla New? I will so make a level with rotating cannon pipes!

My biggest recommendation for you to get started is

Don't use Newer DS as a base for your hack

Have a nice day

Dont use newer ds as a base for ur hack since it will be bad, use vanilla instead and join nsmb central

Ah ok, will just use vanilla as a baserom. Wanted to know what I had to prepare for, were I to use Newer as a baserom.

Sorry to butt into this conversation but using "Newer DS" as a base for your mod is not bad at all, I mean it does have its disadvantages but if you think it would be better to work with "Newer DS" than with "NSMB" that's fine but if you think the opposite then both "Newer DS" and "NSMB" have their advantages and disadvantages here are some.

well it's just my humble opinion don't take it seriously you are free to use what you feel more comfortable and by the way me and my friend "Ultimate MrL36" are working to improve the level editor for Newer DS created by "Helios" to make it more comfortable to edit Newer DS just that it is not finished yet we will publish it soon.

PS: Sorry for my bad english.

Your English is fine, except for interpunction.
So, I will just use vanilla New as my baserom, but maybe if the NewerDS editor you and Ultimate MrL36 are updating, becomes stable and simple enough, I might port my levels over to Newer. If NSMB NMLs can be easily imported into Newer that is, but maybe with the updated NewerDS editor once it releases.

Thanks for telling your side of the story too, NSMBfanatic26. I really appreciate it.

To put it simply, NewerSMB DS is too ambitious to modify. It uses tons of custom code that may look appealing, however is extremely difficult to work with. If you like some of the features used in Newer DS, I recommend extracting the files and porting them over to the original NSMB, as NSMB is a lot easier to work with. Newer DS was coded very specifically to its levels and is extremely difficult to edit because of this. Good luck, feel free to ask any other questions here if you need anything...

So, rotation controllers, are those easy to export to NSMB? That's my main reason I wanted to use Newer as baserom.

And I do have one other interesting question I will ask, but it's in another castle thread.

stuff

some of these claims are sorta hard to quantify (like "less development time") or just wrong ("more internal RAM"?).
i dunno of a list of differences n changes newer ds made to be aware of, but i will say that modding it makes you more likely to encounter unfamiliar errors that you wouldnt have to worry about when modding vanilla nsmb due to more people being familiar with it. additionally when modding newer you wont be able to apply any additional (or remove existing) code hacks, nor do versions of nsmbe past 5.2 work with it.

newer ds's source code is public so in theory you could apply the code patch for the rotation controller yourself. however, ive heard people have had trouble applying code from newer and that its code is hard to work with
