i'm working on an rom hack of new super mario bros. today i wanted to see if the custom world map icons worked but when i start up the NSMBDS editor and then open the rom file of new super mario bros it says something with an overflow and sometimes it says that i don't have acces to the rom files because it's used in an different process. also when i load the rom files in an emulator (DeSmuMe) it also just closes the emulator. i think that the rom files are broken and that i need to re-install it. but i'm worried that i lose basically everything in my rom hack. a friend of mine gave me an link about an program that can see what program uses the file but i didn't find anything

Close DeSmuME or go to DeSmuME's File menu and click "Close ROM". Then you can edit your ROM in NSMB Editor.
Just make sure that the ROM is not in use by and emulator and/or other ROM Hacking tools. _________________________

Then your ROM might be corrupted. Extract your modified files from your corrupted ROM, and insert those files into a clean ROM to see if that works.

i downloaded a new NSMB rom file and i copied everything from the corrupted rom file to the new rom file to see if the new rom file will work but the new rom file also doesn't work so i think it's something in the rom file that doesn't work

well i google translated it from dutch (because i'm dutch) it's says something with an overflow when i load the rom file in NSMBe. after that the editor crashes

What ROM are you using? Because I'm not 100% sure, but it sounds like your ROM might be one of those modified ones by release teams which happens to be slightly bigger than the original.
