IMPORTANT NOTICE (21st November 2015): Due to computer risks and a wide array of technical problems, this hack is now no longer in development, and probably won't be any time in the future unless I come across a miracle.

Introducing my first NSMB hack ever: New Super Mario Bros. Empire!

Let me explain this hack in detail. NSMB Empire is a hack that runs on the theme of towns, villages and cities. It's urban themed, so to speak. In this demo, only World 1 is complete, but the full release will include all-new levels; every single one will be replaced. It's also noticeably harder than the original New Super Mario Bros, so don't expect to not lose any lives along the way.

Also, there are a few things present in the demo that won't be carried over to the full release. Firstly, you may find that the W1 cannon is blocked by a spike block; that block will be removed in the full release where World 4 will be playable. You'll also find that 2-1 (in the full release) will be completeable and not just a "thanks for playing!" type level like in the demo. The demo may also have some bugs, so point those out in the comments if you find any!

Here is a link to a video of 1-1:

And here are a few screenshots:

Things that will be included in the full release:

And last but certainly not least, the demo patch download link!

I really like the level design, graphics, and ideas. Nice video, too.

The only problem is the challenge. Either I am really bad at playing or 1-3 and on is incredibly difficult.

Also, I encountered an overlay9 problem when first applying the demo patch.

Yeah, it is somewhat more difficult than the original NSMB. I may tone it down in the final release if people have too much trouble with it.

What is this "overlay9" problem though?

The overlay9/overlay9_0.bin file was replaced in the patch, making it so when a ROM is patched there is a white screen before the Nintendo logo and nothing happens.

I got the patch to work by replacing overlay9_0.bin with the one from a clean NSMB ROM, though. Here is a fixed patch of it.

So here's my opinion:
- The video is ok but if you want to show us a level it's really bad to speed run it.
- The Level design is good and I mean REALLY good. Looks very funny.
- The Graphics are also very nice looking and I have to say that I am really excited what the other worlds themes will be

And since you have:
- A Video
- Good quality
- A demo

I think this can be approved.

I love the way you design levels! I will sure play this, once there are more levels done or when the hack is finished.
*puts this on the to-play-list

What I personally don't really like is the mixture between retro graphics and new 3d graphics. But there are a lot of hacks that do this and it really is just me who does not quite like this.

overlay9 is wht you edit to have ASM hacks, if you want asm hacks you need to make a xdelta patch

The tilesets seem pretty nice. The level design also seems good. I loved the logo too. The music and backgrounds were outstanding. Overall, this is looking good. Good luck with this hack!

However, like Arceus said, I don't think it's a good idea to speedrun in a video for a hack.

Well I think differently. By speedrunning a level we don't see everything of the level, for example secrets like star coins are still unknown to us then. However, we are able to see the tilesets and the level design in such a speedrun.
Speedrunning a level arouses interest in me because I haven't seen all places of the level yet.

I have no idea how to embed videos, okay?

Use the [.youtube] and [./youtube] tags (without the full stops).

Anyway, your hack looks really good.

Kudos to you for getting such nice graphics. Level Design is very promising too.

It looks bad, ugly, and has a bad level design. I have no hearth.
More seriously, I like the level design and the tileset, I still have to test what the demo offers but I'm not thinking about being disapointed, I'm giving this a try tomorrow

Just a quick little update; I have now fixed all the little "demo-bugs" such as the missing Star Coin in 1-4 and the rope bugs in 1-3. The downloadable demo will still have the bugs, but they'll be gone from the full version.

Also, just to be a real tease, here are a couple of World 2 screenshots (spoilers):

Stay tuned for more progress news, though I won't be giving away any more major spoilers!

I have a question; Did you make those yourself?

Most of the graphics, yes. The world map's floor texture was edited from a Google images search result, and the silver hexagon was made with the MS Word shape tool, but everything else (including the tileset and BG used in the level screenshot) is made by me, specifically from shrunken large-scale MS Paint drawings I did.

You are really talented! I hardly see any hacks that have 100% selfmade graphics.
