Yes, I think it's possible with a flashcard. At least, DS-Pokemon hacks works fine.

So without a r4 card, I can't play it on my ds?

You can buy a flashcard in many computer shops or in the official r4 webpage. Once you've bought it, you need to put the flashcard kernel in the SD root, and then you'll can play ROMs (hacks too).

Okay, you need a flash cart, there is no other way.
And don't get an R4. It is one of the oldest, crappiest, yet most recommended flash cart.

I have an Acekard 2i and I reccomened it for just working.
If you have money, time and patience to spare; a supercard dstwo, if you want loads of features.

Refer to gbatemp.org to make sure you don't get a fake one.

EDIT: Correction from skawo

Doesn't actually do anything.

+1 recommendation for the Supercard DStwo. It's one of the best, if not the best, DS flashcart you can get.

I got a R4 Gold Pro, and it works on a my DSi (but you better not have important files stored on it [I will explain why later]).

I have a M3 DS Real which is really crappy. You can't play DS Games at a certain point (about the 3500. DS Game) which is for example before Pokémon Black & White.
I had an R4, but this one was buggy and DS Games beginning on the 3500. Game or something recently crashed.
And I got another one, still R4 don't remember which name, but it was not bad.

Until the battery of my DS destroyed itself and I could'nt use it anymore...

I have a EDGE flashcart and it works well. It comes with the MicroSD, US and SD Card too. Idk if there's better than EDGE because I only have that one.

Aside from the fact DSTwo has an additional CPU and is compatible with all systems, it's... FUCKING terrible.

It's slow, it has a clunky menu, and the horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE patches that enable it to do all the fancy real-time-save stuff inexplicably ALSO are pretty much required to use SDHC cards with it. And as an added bonus, they cause graphic glitches in NSMBDS and won't even launch edited SM64DS, meaning for hacking you get stuck with <2GB cards.

They still sell flashcards in stores for DS?! The only place I know of that still sells DS stuff is EB Games
