Apparently, I can't connect to the IRC. I get the usual loading text when I connect, but then I get a message saying I'm banned. No reason as to why I'm banned, but yeah. I can't get in to #nsmbhd.

I tried on two different computers, using two different networks, so it can't be an IP or network ban. Even if it were, there would be no reason to ban me anyway.

I copied the text on the screen if anybody can make anything technical out of it... personally I doubt there's anything useful in there.

So, uh, help me out here? Please? This must be some kind of mistake.

I had to ban the NSMBHD IRC because of Thierry's bandodging. Use http://kuribo64.net/?page=irc

It's now fixed. The web irc now sends the IP as ident so we can ban per-ip.
Also this thread belongs to Website Talk. Moving it.

Okay, this deserves an explanation.

Thierry is banned from #nsmbhd. Yet, he keeps coming back as if nothing happened.

The other day, he was using the board's IRC. I wanted to ban him, but since that client acts like a proxy and completely obscures the user's IP from their apparent hostname, I was unable to do so. I instead had to ban the webchat.

Dirbaio should revert to the Java IRC client, for two reasons:

1) the aforementioned reason: acting like a proxy, this client is basically an easy way in for lamers, with no easy way to ban them.

2) since everyone who uses it is connected with the same IP, if too many people connect, all the connections from this server get G-lined. Someone could abuse this to DoS NinaBot. (don't consider doing it or I'll fucking ban you)

The Java applet throws a ton of scary warnings, yes, but it doesn't have these problems.

Edit- apparently Dirbaio fixed the first problem, good. The second problem remains, though.

IPs are no longer obscured, the webchat now sends the IPs as the ident (the thing before the "@"). So we can ban based on IP now.

The second thing we have to fix it by talking to Emuz.

I won't revert to the old IRC. That one sucks. Also I've seen many computers where it plain doesn't work due to derp java.

The new IRC is much better and accessible. Lately there has been more people coming to the IRC thanks to it, which is a good thing and proves that the new webirc is definitely better.

Apparently the best you can get is having the connection limit raised. It doesn't really fix the problem, it just makes it less apparent.

That seems a bit extreme. You could have +m and given people voice.

EDIT: Yes I know the problem was already fixed.

It would have been worse actually, as any person coming in wouldn't have been able to talk unless an op gave them voice.

I was under the impression that it could be done automatically through a bot. Feed it a list of approved names and it gives them voice when they join. The list would cover everyone who goes to the channel regularly.

EDIT: Unapproved people would have to message an OP.

ChanServ could do that. But you'd have to manage the list, and to ensure security you'd have to require people to identify...
