Most importantly; all the instruments and sound effects.

They open quite a lot of it, but Tinke doesn't seem to be able to open the "SSAR" "SBNK" and "GROUP" bits. And DSSS doesn't seem to be able to open anything other than sequences.

Instruments and sound effects are in SWAV files inside SWAR files. They can be viewed with MKDS Course Modifier 4 (latest MKDSCM).

A summary of what I know so far:
SSEQ (Sound Sequence) can be played properly with DSSS, exported to midi with MKDSCM and played and exported properly with VGMTrans.
SWAR (Sound Wave ARchive) can be played and exported properly with Tinke or MKDSCM
SSAR (Sound effect Sequence ARchive (?)) can be played improperly with MKDSCM
SBNK (Sound BaNK) can be exported (properly?) with MKDSCM and exported properly(?) with VGMTrans

The sound effect spawner uses the order of the sound effect seqences in the SSAR (or quite close to it, anyway)

Am I missing anything?

You can export SSEQ+SBNK files as MIDI+DLS or MIDI+SF2 using VGMTrans. Add this to your summary.

I don't know if I would say that VMGTrans exports SSEQs properly as MIDIs since a lot of the notes are off sometimes.

This is a bump, but the question wasn't really ever answered. How can I play the sequences in the SSAR files on the PC? Or do I have to use a DS-based player?

Playing SSAR sequences are possible with the latest MKDSCM (MKDS Course Modifier 4).

(Ninja'd, but posting this anyway since it might still be useful...)

I wrote an SDAT library that we've used to backport NSMBW sound effects to Newer DS, as well as for a few other sound-related tasks. It doesn't actually play anything, but it could be used to convert SSAR sound effects to SSEQs, which can be played in DSSS. You'll have to wait for it to be released, though.
