Very limited. But I like that I get to use elements from a bunch of Mario games all in one package.

From what I've seen of it, it could use more level types, game styles, and enemies. Of course, I can't exactly vote on this, since I don't have the game yet.

Also, this just in- an update's on the way that adds checkpoints and item chains. Also does three other things that aren't to do with level designing.

Well, that's nice, since the way items currently are kind of gets on my nerves for some reason, plus it will be really useful to have checkpoints in the game.

I think that when Super Mario Maker has all the elements of the source games, It could be the end to the hacks...
But, Nintendo couldnt do that, they didnt even include slopes...

Slopes in SMB/SMB3 (nvm, I forgot) MM levels would be a first, you know. Besides, put yourself in thier place. If they were to include slopes, people would still complain. And would they just implement 16x16/32 slopes, or would they have to make all slope angles possible for people to be happy? I don't recall seeing anything close to a slope in SMM, the game is made of full blocks only.

IMO it would be possible, but not beneficial for them, and would be a pain.

SMB3 did have slopes. As for SMB1, literally all they'd have to do is use this:

Well, most of the time, Nintendo is very lazy with aniversary titles, Remember when they simply putted Super Mario All-Stars on a disc and sold it? Or the simple hack-level of Super Luigi U?, well this time they at least made a new game... But, updates can solve anything right?
