When you're making a level, you can set a blue Koopa Troopa in the level with the setting 'In shell'. If you choose this option, the shell won't be a blue shell item. (...will it?)

I don't know if anyone has ever noticed this, but I found out that the blue shell will be a blue shell item, when you groundpound on it.

What? That's not wierd. I found that long time ago, and I didn't find it wierd back then.

Note: you can get the blue koopa shell as pushable shell in-game, too.

...and?

I think I remember the editor saying something about this, but I'm not sure.

The editor says nothing about the groundpound thing.

EDIT: I thought if this was known, it would be in the editor.

IIRC in a Beta version of NSMB, blue Koopas appeared more frequently, and if you jumped on one, instead of the power-up appearing instantly, it would just be a normal blue shell, and to use the shell as a power-up you would have to ground pound on the shell.

This is what I said in the video comments:

It's an unused feature. In older versions of the game, you had to ground pound the shell to become shell mario, after stomping the koopa into it (and possibly just by ground-pounding the koopa - like in the final mariovsluigi).

Oh by the way, it seems like noone noticed you can actully get this type of blue shell in-game.

There's many way to get the shell, as any Mario if you break one of the bricks when the blue koopa walks over it.

*gonna show you what I am talking about in a video*

That is a good point. Possibly still a leftover from early behaviour though.

Back then, you had to stomp the koopa, and then ground pound in his shell to get to Shell Mario.

They just made it easier. Now you can ground pound directly on the koopa, or on the koopa shell, to get to Shell Mario.

And, as everyone know, they made the shell item that appears when you simply stomp the koopa. They also added the shell item as powerup you can find, like all others, in blocks (ref. unused tile behavior of block containing a shell item), toad houses, ect.

It is not necessarily true that back then, you could not ground-pound the Koopa to power-up. Unless you have translated the magazine with the picture in, and it says that explicitly.
