You should be done when you decompressed only those 2:

I did the same and it worked because the needed stuff is stored in one of those 2.

EDIT: The first one is actually decompressed all time IIRC.

I decompressed 9_9, found the first two number-letter thingy things, changed them, put it back in overlay9 and then compressed overlay9_9. After the Nintendo logo, I got a black screen.

You are not supposed to do it like this
After you decompressed it, just open the WHOLE ROM in a HEX Editor and change it. After that you are done. You can just continue editing/playing/whatever.

Can  ray (or somebody else that achieved to do this) make a small tutorial on how to do the "Press A on tilescreen" thing?
That could be very useful.

Also...how can you change the font of the "Press A" thingy? Because while I was uploading some screenshots of some bugs that I encounted in NSMB+ (it's Tierage's hack for those who don't know) in the Screenshots category I've seen this other screenshot uploaded by  ray...

First decompress all the overlays within the rom, open it in a hex editor like Hex Workshop, press Ctrl+F, paste the code from the left, press find. It should find one instance of it in the rom, change it to what's on the right and save.

"it", not "overlay"

Oh. I didn't really know that within the ROM, open it in a hex editor meant opening the ROM with a hex editor. I thought it meant to open the overlays with a hex editor.

Doesn't actually do anything.

Very true, but all conversation after that implied having to hex edit the overlay, not the rom. I've been confused for the past 2 pages for that reason.

You can still hex edit the individual overlay if you want, just don't compress it back.

Yeah. Yeah, SEE

TRS gets it.
He just, gets it.

And he's a local mod so he's automatically ALWAYS right.

Tierage, this is a serious thread. Please don't devote entire posts just to continue the argument.

Scrolling back through this thread really proves how much of an asshole I was throughout the discussion. My apologies.

Sorry, this is the first time I have done hex editing .

It's not as difficult as it may look like. It only consists in changing some numbers.

However, to search for this "5C009F150010D015011081120010C015" (also called Hex string), first of all you should open the ROM with the hex editor, then you should use the search function (usually, it's represented by a magnifying glass).

Don't know about the hex editor that you're using). Then, in the "type" box, select "Hex" and enter in the hex text box, the code (5C009F150010D015011081120010C015).
Once, you find it, select the string, cancel the numbers and write in the new code (5C009F150010D015011081120000A0E3). Click the save button (represented by a floppy disk) and you're done.

If you're using the NSMBe's hex editor...don't use it. Its search function isn't much accurated (sorry  Dirbaio).
Use another hex editor, instead. I suggest to use Hex Editor Neo, it has all the features needed to do this small thingy.
