Karma is a community "rating" on you. If you go onto somebody else's profile, you see a section on karma, and 2 arrows. 1 up, 1 down. If you hit up, it increases it by 5 points (I think if a mod does it, it's 10) but if they hit down, it goes down 5 points.
Pretty much that's how it works. |

Yes, it's just a rating you get based on stuff you do at the board. It has no effect on whether you get banned.
You get banned only if you don't follow the rules, which I suggest you read here: http://nsmbhd.net/faq/ |

Kind of, yes.
It's meant to encourage people to post quality, not quantity. Before the karma update, deleted posts and threads had no impact on karma and people didn't care, and just posted lots of crap to get their postcount up (Yes, it was kind of a game of who posted more). That lead to lots of low-quality spammy posts  IMO post quality went up a lot since the Karma Update
