Is there a way (without ASM hacking, or anything like that) to make it so when you defeat a boss you just continue on with the level instead of finishing it?

I don't think there is. In the World 1 Castle, I tried removing the ground, adding a warp, and creating a wall to block the exit room. But since there was a cutscene, it didn't care that Mario fell in the lava or walked through a wall or ignored a warp.

I don't think there is a way without ASM, though. But the function for triggering cutscenes after a boss battle ends is there somewhere.

No, there isn't But maybe there is a cutscene controller somewhere there. I have never tried modifying a Castle level before so I'm not sure...

No there is not. At least no "Epic Bowser Junior Cutscene Controller" sprite you imagines.

And when the boss gets beat one time, the cutscene don't displays anymore, don't forget it.


You could maybe ASM it, tough. Well meh.

Have a look at 1-A in Matrako's NSMB hack.
You have to defeat all the bosses in order to get at the end of the level.
And he didn't use ASM as well.

I suggest you to have a look in the editor at that level in Matrako's hack and see how the boss are setted.

Basically, make sure the key (if there is one) is thrown off screen and replace the bowser switch with a ? switch + tile destroyers and block the exit pipe with sprites which are destroyed by the boss being defeated.

Hi, everybody!

Yes. As Hiccup has said, the only thing you need to do is removing (or placing offscreen) the Boss battle key location or the Bowser Boss Switch: the end of level cutscene does not play until Mario touches the key or presses that switch.

However, after beating a boss most of the sprites you have placed in that area became "inactive". That is, most of them will dissapear, while others (like the ? switch) became solid. I have not checked all of them, but the only sprite I have found that still works is the warp entrance (besides the boss key / switch sprites).

Also, after beating a boss, the timer stops until Mario enters in another area, and the ? blocks (well, I think is every block that gives you points if Mario hits it) stop giving you items and, in fact, dissapear after hitting them.

But, um...

Do boss battles even work in 1-5? Matrako, you did it in 1-A, correct? Don't boss battles not work there?

Yes he did make real bosses, not enemies that must be defeated. .-. Like Bowser, Mummipokey, Cheepskipper, Mega Goomba etc..

Anyways, Matrako, you used a connected pipe leading to Mummipokey but the level was 1-A?! How did you do that part?
