When I import a bitmap, the white changes to transparent. Why is it doing that?

The editor makes white colors transparent. Try making the white a little darker… like light grey should work.

What if I want white?

The reason I'm saying this is not because it matters, but because I started hacking NSMB to get away from the palette limitations of SMW hacking. Instead it seems there's a whole new set of limitations...

Come on that´s not so hard I think. You can just recolor the bitmap after importing it, so you can draw the white by yourself. Hacking is not just magic you also have to do smth. by yourself.

Yes well I could do that. I actually tried it too, but when there's a lot of white pixels mixed in with others, it's not easy to fix. Regardless, I don't mind using a color indiscernible from white, like FEFEFE.

A white that is a single shade darker than pure white would be unrecognizable to the human eye. When you import the bitmap select the whitest colour available in the palette and just use it to fill in the transparent places.

Yeah, easier to use FEFEFE in the original image and import it though.

EDIT: F8F8F8 is the closest to white that will import correctly. Still indiscernible, so that's good. I wonder why colors like F9F9F9 are treated as white...

It's because the DS stores colors as 5 bit per channel (red, green or blue) while usual images have 8. When importing, the lowest 3 bits are discarded.

Actually the first non white color should be F7, not F8. Maybe it's doing that because palette generation...

Either way, I'm pretty sure the editor does NOT treat white as transparent. If it does, it's a bug or something...

What are you importing into? Is it a tileset?

For me the editor makes white transparent if I import it into tilesets or other textures.

I recently made a topic about this in the nsmb editor suggestion forum and had my topic moved to the implemented section (incorrectly, since this hasn't quite been fixed yet) after being linked to this thread. I totally thought this was intended behavior to help people get rid of their backgrounds . Thnx for addressing this, Dirbaio.
