Don't really have an introduction, so I'll just skip straight to it.

A few months ago, a user named TLMB hosted a contest on SMWCentral to make the best Yoshi's Island level. It got entries in the double digits (pretty much unheard of for a contest not hosted by staff), and garnered a lot of attention towards YI hacking. Now, YI was already a popular game to hack there, but apparently it requires multiple tools and a bit of technical knowledge, which was a big barrier to entry.

What I want to is to hold a level design contest for NSMB, on SMWCentral, in order to hopefully draw some attention to this site and get more talented people here. This is how I want to do it:
- First, create a thread just to try to get gauge interest. If I can get a few people interested and it gets approved, I'll go ahead and start the contest thread.
- Write a basic how-to tutorial that covers everything needed to make a simple level. Things like importing graphics may or may not be covered depending on how lazy I am. Link the tutorial and the editor in the first post of the contest thread.
- Advertise with my custom title, signature, on the IRC, and all that.

The reason I'm posting this here is to see if I can get any help, be it in setting up the contest, or drawing more interest, or whatever may be needed. Specifically, I want to know if any of you would be willing to participate in or judge the contest.

Ooh, sounds like a good idea! It can never hurt to get some more people interested in NSMB hacking.

I'd be willing to help out with the contest too if you need it. I've got an account on SMWC, although I never post there, so let me know if you need help with anything.

I'll give you other examples - "Title Screen Movie Contest", "The 9th Special Level Contest" (10 entries), "The Joke Entry Contest" and "2nd Annual Strawberry “Short and Sweet” Level Design Contest". Not much, but not many contests were hosted by non-staff.

Also, sounds interesting, but I won't take part in that. But perhaps others will be interested.

A question: would it be okay if participants could have permission to use the Community Remix tilesets solely for the contest?

Also, I'm still working on the rules and whatnot. But concerning judging, what I'm wanting to do is have three judges: myself, someone from SMWC, and someone from here. So I was wondering if I could get one person here to volunteer to judge.

EDIT: Also I'm planning on offering prizes for the top 3 places, but most likely they'll just be cheap games off of Steam.

Sure, as long as the levels they make can be included in the community remix. (Crediting the level authors of course). This will be a nice way to get moar progress

Hmmmm. I'm not sure if it's necessary. Maybe it could cause drama for people fighting over the prizes? IDK.

Nah, I just mention it because generally contests with prizes hosted on the site have a better turnout than contests that don't.

Just me brainstorming, pretty much.

Yes. I posted it in the contest approval thread to get it approved, but I was told to clarify what is acceptable in regards to level length and difficulty. I haven't been able to respond the past few days because I spent the weekend with friends, but I was planning to reply today or tomorrow.

Now, I'm pretty bad with difficulty. Could anyone help me with this?

I would say: Difficulty like a mid-game level. Not easy like 1-1, not hard like 8-1. That would give quite a bit of wiggle room. Some levels in that part of the game have a base level of difficulty all the way throughout, and others are fairly easy but have a few really tough spots.

Hello, this is aj6666, administrator from SMW Central.

A week ago, TRS requested to run a NSMB hacking contest over here and SMW Central at the same time. I just came to say that I'm willing to see this contest live and since it's going to be a big thing, and I'd like it to be an official contest here and on SMW Central, with official prizes that will be handed out to the winners regardless of which site they come from.

However, before we start this, there is a few things I'd like to discuss with anyone who's going to take part on the organization of this contest. This includes, the current rules, the judges, the prizes and the date we're starting.

By the way, I have asked SMW Central's two PR moderators: THY and Pikerchu13 to come over here, so they will be helping us with the organization of the contest.

That being said, I'm happy we have this opportunity to make something together and I'm looking forward for this to be a nice competition.

I would be happy to talk about the contest specifics.

As of right now, everything planned is as I wrote in the request post:

I can't think of any specific rule to elaborate on or change at the moment, but please feel free to comment or request.

Judges are still up in the air. Nobody has volunteered recently, but I also haven't asked anybody.

As for prizes, I was considering a $15/10/5 split like the recent vanilla contest, but I'm still undecided. If this is going to be an official contest, prizes such as custom titles and name colors could also be considered.

As for the date, I'm ready whenever everything is finalized. If I had to list a specific day, I would say sometime on the 15th or 16th since I'm off work those days, but if you believe this isn't possible, please let me now.

I assume you mean this money would be used for Steam games, so I guess that could work. I don't know if this feature would be possible here at NSMBHD, but if it's possible, we should give trophies for the first three places. Otherwise, a custom title or color could work too.
